Back when I started it was common for there to be between 14-20 players at a table. I think a large part of what kept us engaged was the game was so new and there were no cell phones.
During 5e I have DMed 10 players at the table and that is a couple too many. I prefer 6 at the table. I run a high-paced, encounter-based game. Those encounters often involve social situations or exploration, but we do a lot of combat. We are a pretty fast group when it comes to combat and do not tolerate a lot of hemming and hawing on a player's turn.
We play on Zoom these days and I would much prefer 4 or 5 players. It is just harder to engage a larger group remotely.
