Well at least it wasn't as bad as Captain Picard allways getting his First Officer killed whenever he commanded everyone on the bridge to "Fire at Will."

Yup, as many people have said, the main idea is to have fun.

Some people have fun by "building up" a character. It's kind of like gardening, in a way.

Some people have fun by playing heroic characters that save the world, or doing other things that they wouldn't be able to (or dare to) in real life.

Some others have fun by dreaming up new and different worlds, complicated plots and devious NPCs.

I'm sure other posters will be able to supply more ways to have fun.
 

I'm real bad about just going a couple of sessions and then at the end saying, Ok, you each gain one level. We just don't bother with things that require you to spend XP (high level magics and item creation) so it never comes up.

The goal of D&D, much like the goal of this message board, is to have fun. Whether it be by playing deep immersion roleplay in character, to use and argue every bit of rules minutiae, or whether it's to swill beverages and eat pretzels, and blow off steam about how much work sucked that week. Whatever nets you and your group the most enjoyment, is the objective of the game. The game system is loose enough to let all of these goals happen.
 

This would be an apt place for the Conan quote ending about the "lamentations of their women." Alas, I have had too little caffeine today and I cannot recall it fully.

So, I'll be blah and say, "Have fun. Game on!"

The purpose of role playing is to have fun :)

I've always viewed role playing as more akin to a collectively written story. The GM and players all get together and determine the protagonists, antagonists, and setting. Then the plot is resolved through play. I've always thought that this is one of the reasons that railroading doesn't work. If I just wanted to be passive in my own fantasy world, I would read a book.
