What's the secret behind D&D's ability to sustain long term play?

Gundark, I believe that Dinkledog was very clear when he moderated this thread earlier that this isn't the place for edition wars, and the comment of yours which I've just deleted flies in the face of that.

Please don't do it again. If you have any difficulty or comment about this please either email me or report this post so that all the moderators can discuss any issues you may have.

Did you read the linked thread's first post.
No, I didn't. I didn't think this thread was supposed to be a parallel continuation of a thread on another board. I thought he just gave the link to show what prompted his starting this thread. If folks want to argue against a post on another board, why don't they do so on *that* board?

I responded, and read the responses here, as discussion of the opening post *here*. I didn't think that an edition/game war elsewhere was being brought to us for participation here. I saw Gundark asking:
Gundark said:
Tell me what you think? Am I right? Wrong?
He wasn't asking our opinion of someone else's thoughts and words, on another board.

I wasn't saying that long term campaigns couldn't be done with other games, I myself have run other systems/genres that lasted a long time. It seems however that generally (I'm speaking generally) games other than D&D seem to fall apart sooner than D&D. I longest campaign that I ran was a D&D game. Like I and the poster of the original thread over on rpg.net wondered was why? I gave my opinion of why I thought that was and asked if you agreed or not.

There is an increasing tendency for people to come back at Moderators within a thread, even after we have specifically asked people not to.

I've removed the post and I'm closing this thread down. It has already required a lot of moderation.

It could be restarted in a few days time if necessary, but I think it has run its course.

Clunk.
