What's your favorite PHB spell?

For me it's either Speak with Animals (for all the reasons Steverooo mentioned[/i] or Entangle. My primary PC is a ranger (archer) so Entangle comes in especially useful. If I had to choose one though...

Speak with Animals. When combined with my Handle Animal skill and Wild Empathy ability it just rocks

I'm a fan of command and greater command myself. They just scream "Jedi Mind Trick." Such great spells.

Dispel Magic.
What a great spell. Turn off one spell, try to shut down one spell on everyone in an area, ready an action to counter a spell. What doesn't it do?

And what kind of mage invents a spell like this?
"Hmmm ... I should create a spell that will let me turn off other wizards spells. Of course, they'll eventually be able to do it back to me, but I will have a short-term advantage!"

And just about everyone can learn this spell too! Wizards? Sure. Sorcerors? OK. Bards? Why not! Cleric? If the gods will. Paladins? Yep, them too!

And talk about being dog-eared in my PHB. I use this spell nearly every game, but I inevitably need to look it up when I do. There's just so many permutations for its use.
I would love to see a Behind the Spells for Dispel Magic

Web- so useful for nonlethal combat situations, retreats, and as bridges (cover it with something first). I also like Bastion's upgrades in Spells and Magic (the highest causes Dex damage).

If psionic powers count: Create Astral Construct (design your own monster!)

If invocations count: Flee the Scene (get out of dodge and leave behind a fake target!)

If neither counts: Phantasmal Killer (because you just might drop the BBEG in the first round).

[Pinotage]

Alter Self. Excellent duration, great armor class and other abilities, very useful spell for mages and arcane spellcasters such as assassins. Can breathe underwater, gain beneficial racial skill bonuses and lots more.

Oh, and I already own Behind the Spells: Magic Missile.
