Play by post. Definitely. Integrated dice roller, forums for individual topics and different threads, private messaging capability for private communications - all in one happy place! :) All the things missing from Play-by-email.

"Play by Messenger" should probably be named "Play by Instant Messenger" (maybe a nice Mod could do that :)), as PbM is the acronym for Play by Mail already. ;)

I Selected Play by Instant Messenger, largely because it's the only one I actually have experience with. My gaming group from home and I kept our game alive for quite a while with me teleconferenced in via IM. We'd probably still be doing that now, but the time difference makes things rough to plan around kids activities. I'm really looking forward to trying Ghost Orb though, it sounds good. I'd like to try a lot of the others too though after reading this thread.

I DESPISE trying to play D&D over the net.
You're better off just hooking everyone up for a game of Warcraft, or Diablo or something.

Play by Post is the only format I've used. If I could coordinate my players for Open RPG or something similar, we'd just get together face to face.

I have to say I've been pleasantly surprised by the online experience. I really didn't have much faith in the idea until I tried it and now I'm hooked. :)

1-1 game using Messenger works great. Definitely second only to tabletop. However it's not well suited to large PC groups. Suits the lone hero paradigm excellently.

PBEM can be good, but slow. It works very differently to tabletop, PCs can easily be in different locales. Suits a literary style and highly developed PCs interacting. PBEM dungeon-crawls suck; it's the opposite of Diablo or NWN which only really handle dungeon crawls.
