Usually anything aquatic gets obnoxious because your characters aren't built to do anything useful underwater.

I agree. I ran an adventure where the party was diving on a shipwreck for sunken treasure. They got frustrated because I woundnt just hand them rings of swimming & free action, or necklaces of adaptation and inexhaustible supply of water breathing spells. I gave them plenty of other options for success but they just whined because I wasnt making it easy for them to complete their goal.
