I plan on purchasing the 4e books at release time and running a campaign with them. If that proves fun and well I may run or play in other games.

There's no real switch going on, though, because I'm not currently playing in any 3.x games. I think it's unlikely I'd play 3rd in future but just as I'd be happy to play any of the earlier editions if someone was planning on doing something interesting with them, I'd be happy to play in another 3rd game if someone does something interesting with them.

Yeah, I started with 1st Ed, but have played the most 2nd Ed out of all the editions to date.

But looking back, 2nd Ed kept all the crap parts of 1st Ed (rules-wise), but lost the vibe, IMO. The campaign settings of 2nd Ed were marvelous, though.

Definitely lost the vibe - I agree completely. I too have played more 2nd than any other edition. I am looking forward to OSRIC 2 and HackMaster 5th. I'll most likely keep playing original AD&D, but those releases have me interested.

Happy gaming Steely.

I'm going to be getting H1 and running it for the crew as well. I'll almost certain end up with (at minimum) the 4E core and a couple expansions if it's as popular as 3.x, but whether I buy enough to run or just enough to play a character I like every now and again depends on what I see.

I too look forward to HM 5th. I'm really hoping they steal heavily from Aces & Eights. I have fantasies of a nearly-pure simulationist fantasy game.

4E Game Plan

In the last couple of months I discovered True20 and like it better than even 3.x. So I will be focusing on that.

If I stick with D&D it will be 3.5.

I have pretty much realized 4E is not for me - at least, it is not aimed at my style of play. Not that it is bad, and in fact may be the best game for players new to RPG's.

The problem in the group I play in is that it's an Ebberon campaign. I talked to the DM about it and he's stated that he'll switch to 4E when the Ebberon 4E setting book and the PHB that contains the nature and psionc power sources comes out. We're assuming that'll be in 2009.

The other group I'm in, I'm running the game. I'm not entirely sold on 4E and even if I were, I don't think anyone wants to switch until all their character's can be loosely translated into 4E terms. Again, this will require the release of the PHB that contains the nature and psionics power source. I could, if I had the time, gin up a bunch of house rules to allow that now, but frankly I have better things to do with my time.

That being said, I've already devised a fiendish scheme that will allow me to run my current campaign while also giving the players a chance to get a taste of 4E. It should be pretty cool.

Man - me too. I have Aces & Eights and I think it is an awesome game. I'm just not that interested in a western campaign. However, if Kenzer applies the same game design to HackMaster 5th, I'll be a happy gamer.

You have obviously not seen HarnMaster Gold ;)

Haha, HarnMaster 3 and HarnMaster Gold are freakin' amazing games. Gold can be quite cumbersome. I can never find player to start a campaign, but I have all HarnMaster products. The maps are a thing of beauty and they're the most useful game maps ever. The one time I did get a few guys together to play their character were ambushed by barbarians, and after a few PCs lost a limb or two they wanted to play something else. Awesome stuff. :)
