What's your perfect movie

I tend to think that Top Gun is a very tight movie.
It's good but a little simplistic. Top Gun Maverick, on the other hand, feels finely-crafted to deliver the best possible experience, its early acts introducing and defining its characters while also providing the audience with so perfect a roadmap for the actual mission to come that they aren't left wondering about any of the why or how of it, and can instead just experience it in its full intensity - and then, that final act sends us back into unknown territory, with enough death flags having been raised that the tension of the escape and dogfights is real and gripping.

Also one of the most rewatchable movies I've seen.

Each person has their own standard for perfection when it comes to film. My stance is that there is no perfect film. For me film isnt an intellectual exercise, it's about how it makes you feel and a lot of that is how well the pacing, the story and the performances are put together. That being said:

is Kubrick's PATHS OF GLORY a perfect film? Yeah.
is Cameron's theatrical cut of ALIENS a perfect film? Yeah
is Spielberg's JAWS a perfect film? Yeah.
is John Woo's HARD BOILED a perfect film? Yeah.
is Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING a perfect film? Yeah
is Wong Kar-Wai's IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE a perfect film? Yeah

There are more but for me these are the ones that come to mind.

For me, I guess perfect means “feels perfectly executed the first time you see it, no notes; it then holds up very well if you rewatch it”. I’ve felt like that about very few films, as you might expect, but I’d say:
  • Grosse Pointe Blank
  • Big Hero Six
  • Klaus
When I still had netflix, Klaus was always on my Christmas viewing list, has to be one of the best Christmas movies I've seen.

I agree, I think it's unequaled as a Christmas movie, and is an excellent movie generally - it should have got the 2019 Oscar for best animated.

(Toy Story 4 isn't a bad film but it's not really in the same league - it was more of a prize for the series than for that specific film, which is annoying given that TS3 got the Oscar in 2010.)

(Big Hero 6 did get the Oscar in 2014, which is absolutely right.)

My list:
  • Blade Runner
  • Fellowship of the Ring
  • Jaws
  • Ghostbusters
  • The Princess Bride
  • Mad Max Fury Road
  • Night of the Living Dead (even if Dawn of the Dead is my favorite. And that's an important distinction to make. For example, Conan the Barbarian is probably my favorite movie, but is it a perfect movie?)
Fellowship of the Ring. I love all 3 movies, but Fellowship is essentially perfect.
Would agree. Fellowship of the Ring is, in my opinion, the best of them.

People have brought up so many great films. I may not rank them as high as jurassic Park but they'd be close (I'm sure it's just my love of dinosaurs that gives it the top spot). Then again, princess bride has been mentioned a couple of times and rate that as a perfect film.
