Wheel of Time - Anyone Playing?

Angel Tarragon

Dawn Dragon
I was just wondering if The Wheel of Time Campaign Setting is worth it. I've been asked by a few of gamers if there is a possibilty of of us gaming in it, but I'd like to hear the community here has to say about it.

How many books are available for the product line? I don't want to have to spend a small fortune for it if there are a lot of books. Which 'core' Wheel of Time books will I need?

Any and all help is appreciated.

I like it, though it does have some balance issues where the one power is concerned especially in comparison to classes that do not use it..though certainly nothing terminal.

I ran it for a while when it first came out, though it didnt last for my lot mainly as my group is equally split between those who love jordans wheel of tijmes books and those who despise them.

There are only two books for the RPG the main rulebook and the prophecies of the dragon campaign softcover book. There are almost certainly unlikely to be tbe any more books for the setting from Wizards at this point..and it didnt really recieve much support from them when it was first released..but I appreciate them releasing it all the same.

There are also some very good netbooks produced by the Wot RPG fan community that are well worth downloading too, though last I recall the site that hosted them was moving to a new plae and I cant recall where, perhaps one of the other posters can recall.

As for what you need..beyond the core wheel of time RPG rulebook itself you dont really need anything else to run it except some players, dice, character sheets etc... and a knowledge of the setting helps for the DM... but you can get the gist of it from the book itself if needs be.

10, so far.
10? I have 11 on my shelf

  1. New Spring (prequel)
  2. The Eye of the World
  3. The Great Hunt
  4. The Dragon Reborn
  5. The Shadow Rising
  6. The Fires of Heaven
  7. Lord of Chaos
  8. A Crown of Swords
  9. The Path of Daggers
  10. Winter's Heart
  11. Crossroads of Twilight.
And, from what I've heard there's going to be 2 more prequels that are sequels to New Spring. Plus however many are left in the series. The last book dragged on forever for me. I hope the next one isn't so dry. I've enjoyed all the rest of the books.

As in the words of Austin Powers: Ouchkibibble. Do I reaaly need to read all of these to get a 'feel' for the world? Is there a web/fansite that can summarize the books?

Both sites include spoilers.

There are 10 main sequence books, plus the New Spring prequel and a now-somewhat-outdated guidebook. There will be at least two more main sequence books and some prequels.

The RPG is written to take place after Book 7, Lord of Chaos. For example, it doesn't account for the MAJOR event at the end of Crossroads of Twilight. I'd suggest that at the very least you read the first three or four books if you're going to GM it.

All in all, I like the core WoT-RPG book. I just wish it was supported (WotC only had a contract for the core book and Prophecies of the Dragon) and updated when the novels are eventually over, with an eye for playing in multiple eras of play (like the Star Wars RPG), such as the Age of Legends/Breaking, Hawkwing's time, Rand's time, post-Tarmon Gaidon, etc.

It seems to me that with such a following and a strong fanbase (Otherwise there would not be so many novels in the series) that there should be a friggin' movie. Is there any chance of such?

I've heard no credible sources. The main problem is that there'd be no way to adapt the entire series to film. You'd have to do something very limited, like JUST The Eye of the World.

I'd note here that Jordan has become increasingly adamant that he's going to do everything he can to finish the main sequence in two more novels, even if no one thinks he can actually do it. I certainly don't, if only because I can't see how you can go from "at least three more books" after Winter's Heart to "almost certainly two more books" after Crossroads of Twilight when almost nothing happened in Crossroads of Twilight. He's also decided to finish the main series before the second and third prequel.

You mean Winter's Heart. As per above, there are no major events in Crossroads of Twilight. I'm not sure there are any minor events in Crossroads of Twilight.

Same here. If RJ by some miracle really does live up to the "two more books" thing, I'd hope that WotC (or another top-tier d20 company) can put together a revised edition and get it out the door around the same time as the paperback of book 12.

Myself, I run a play-by-post d20 WoT game in an MSN group (http://groups.msn.com/WoTAdventure) , and have written a few mildly popular house rules (some of which are in the second netbook). Links to my optional rules are in my signature.
