1985 AD&D1e by group osmosis
I used to hang out in our local library who had all the AD&D books on the shelves, and I would stand there looking at them for hours. One day, this guy asked if he could see the book I was looking at. He said he needed to look something up for a game he was in. I asked him where he played and he said there was a game going on right now in one of the meeting rooms. He took me back and introduced me to the DM who happened to be the husband of the Head Librarian. I sat down, they walked me through rolling up a character and thus I played my first game of D&D. Throg Oxenbash, Human Fighter, Wisdom 3. I played weekly for the next 4 months until my family moved out of the area.
Despite later owning the AD&D books, I didn't play D&D in any form until 2000 with 3.0. From then it was a combination of reading and osmosis. I wasn't introduced to B/X until 2009, and it has now become my favorite edition.
