I started playing during Dragonlance right before FR came out and I bought into FR immediately. Greyhawk was already the 'old' setting at that time, and even though we played obviously GH adventures (against the giants anyone?), we never actually were set in GH.

That was during the 80s, and I honesly haven't ever heard it suggested to play in GH in any groups I've been in since. My last DM started us in GH on an adventure path (so it wasn't really GH) but then switched it to Eberron and no one really noticed...most of them, including the DM, were fairly new to the hobby.

GH is kinda like my Grandpas...

I use stuff from Greyhawk--adventures, items, the rare charecter--all the time.

But like all good grognards, I use them in my own campaigns and my own world.

For me, FR inspired me more than Greyhawk did. I read history books for fun, even then, but Greyhaw didn't inspire me the way the FR grey box did. I enjoyed it and changed all of my campaigns to FR pretty quickly after that.

And the original Waterdeep and the North supplement really hooked me. That cover is still one of my favorites ever:

I was an OD&D person. Nominally there were a couple of Greyhawk adventures available then, but as I had started out with just three little book, I never got used to the notion of using someone else's world.

So, never really started with Greyhawk and, with what I have seen of it subsequently, I shall not morn its passage.

Conversely, there is so much material available for Greyhawk spread over so many editions that the setting will not entirely die unless all the players simply give up on it. Folks, all the fluff is still there -- only the crunch has altered. If you thought it was a viable setting before, it still is! All you have to do is re-stat a few critters and magic items.

Yeah I have the comedy Castle Greyhawk on shelf and haven't even bothered to try and sell it because I can't really conceive of anyone wanting it...

Heck, I ran the thing once. It wa actually great fun, but you really ahd to fudge a lot to make it work.

I voted "Greyhawk grognard until I die!" However, after stating that, Paizo's new campaign setting may soon become my new Greyhawk. Like Eric Noah said about FR, I have a chance at being a part of this new setting from its very beginning. In most ways, Golarian reminds of Greyhawk. And that's no coincidence, really, considering that Erik Mona and others of us that have had a hand in its design are old school 'Hawkers.
