I was good up to roughly 1373 DR and some of the latter 3rd ed Realms books. Never used Spellplague era Realms, unlikely to use post sundering Realms. The 3rd ed Dragon book was the last book I cared about official FR lore as it started to get a bit silly.
Fr started to get silly well before the 4th edition disaster. I think 3rd FR was actually worse. Time of troubles was stupid but didnt really affect things for me and I started making my own worlds soon after that. I think old FR was ok because it was a generic setting. Once they started with the tis raining drow every where I turn and other lame story lines, I had a hard time even reading the books for free. 4th editon setting was actually ok because they tried to generic it again but hoe they got there was just so bad.

I'm a canon junkie. I admit it. So I voted whatever the 5e continuity says. Mainly I think I'm this way because I love incorporating whatever the latest thing off the presses is into my game. In 3rd edition, the shade invaded my game. 4th I ran a short campaign in the area around Aglarond (to keep it close to Thay, which I love). In 5th I've started on the Sword Coast to take advantage of the current published adventures until a full campaign guide comes out (or we get more information on what is happening across the realms).
