When do baby goblins become evil?

Gez said:
No. Selfishness is evil. You can evil without murdering anyone. And babies are cruel. Kids will pull the legs and wings of bugs out of playful cruelty. They'll kick and bite you, other kids, pets, etc. out of malice. They'll try to steal their siblings' share of candies. They'll have all sorts of nasty pranks which can have serious, long-lasting consequences.

This is not babies but rather toddlers and even then it is not real accurate. Cruelity is like malice in that they both require fore thought of what is being done and knowing it is "not nice". An act can be a cruel act but that doesn't make the initiator cruel if they don't know what they are doing.

When I was very, very young (around 3), I saw my older brother (around 6) crush ants. It made the little boy I was cry, "don't kill poor ants". (My mom made sure I never forget this, she loves to tell this anecdote to everybody I meet. Mothers...) If I was old enough to understand this was mean for ants, then he was, too.

Anyway, this only proves that big brothers are evil murderers, not that all children are.

So, to prove that babies are, indeed, evil, I will have to use photographical evidence. All these documents are famous enough to be fresh in everybody's memory, and will undisputedly establish the evilness of young children.

That makes sense; I tend to play in a very third person distanced academic style except for periodic intense verbal interactions with key NPCs in bed.

Hmm.

As I alluded in my last post, there is not a doubt in my mind that I'm in a tiny minority.

Yes, foosie, you already said you're a crank. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Because I like gaming worlds to be ones in which we transport ourselves into a different mindset as well as a different setting. For me, identifying with an alien way of thinking about the world deeply enriches my roleplaying experience.

Oh dear, the D&D ruleset does not adequately serve the purposes of cranks. A terrible situation indeed. I recommend HYBRID.

Gez,

On the one hand I appreciate that others are also getting a little tired of this nonsense. On the other hand, I'm getting really sick of that beer picture regardless of its rhetorical function.

Hong,

I can see how posting completely irrelevant nonsense allows you to maintain an adversarial relationship with me without you actually posting anything I can actually shoot down but I think these dada-ist ad hominem attacks are probably more appropriate for nothingland forums or the Hivemind threads and not for ENWorld generally.

You know, I agree. VB is a really crappy beer.

How about this:

I read ENWorld using a text-only browser. It let's me ignore all the cute avatars, icons, and other pictures. I know a picture is worth a thousand words so if you want to persuade me, you better start typing because I'm not curious enough to fire up a graphical browser to see your pictures.

I think the spell works fine, since it works off alignment or spell descriptor (for evil spells).

Yes, but it treats different classes of creatures differently, and adjusts the aura strength accordingly. I'd find it very useful for irredeemably Evil creatures to detect like Evil Clerics while misguided people who choose evil detect like run of the mill Evil creatures. YMMV if you don't need that distinction. If I were to start up another D&D campaign in the setting I'm running, I'd probably house rule that.

I believe the issue is determining alignment itself. Once alignment is set then the spell works aswritten, the problem is assigning an alignment in the first place. Not that in 2nd ed the paliidna detected evil intent vice evil alignment, made things a whole lot muckier.

I'm not asking to detect intent. Detecting alignment is fine. I simply wish that the strength of the aura indicated redeemability rather than simply whether they are a cleric, undead, an outsider, etc. The Detect Evil already has a mechanism for adjusting strength. I simply with it were applied a little differently.
