When making an AoO, can I attempt to disarm the opponent instead?

When I get to make an AoO on an opponent, instead of just just making a melee attack on him, can I make a Disarm attempt instead?

(Oh, and you can do anything that qualifies as an 'attack action' which includes disarms and trips.)

or a grapple for that matter. Good to stop a rogue that actually provokes an AoO.

Look at the description of the Disarm action. It says in part: "This action substitutes for a melee attack, not an action. As melee attacks, it can be used once in an attack or charge action, one or more times in a full attack action, or even as an attack of opportunity."

With the Improved Trip Feat you can even trip AND attack him as part of that AoO. Or trip and disarm.

It is even possible that you "disarm" a spellcaster, robbing him of his material components or holy symbol, IIRC.
