Sometimes a DM will do something unexpected and wierd in a campaign which players will run with and ends up adding to the fun.
In a recent campaign started with the party inadvertantly saving the world by beating off a Githyanki invasion through a portal and getting sucked through themselves. After spending some time figuring out the portal system and the ominous reason behind it we managed to get back to our world.
This is where the strange twist came in, turned out the initial battle had been seen via a scrying device specifically designed to moniter the portals, and the king was so impressed he followed the progress of the party via sevral permanent scrying devices, showing nobles and various other people who were visiting. This turned the party into national heroes. When we found out about the scrying devices (which only gave vision, no sound), instead of getting all metagame about the costs and rituals needed, we played on it, flourishing whenever a monster was defeated, or a particularly good blow was landed, using flash cards to explain what we were doing ie: Pro Tip it is sometimes wise to search for traps, after a fighter set a trap off.
All in all it added to the fun of the campaign. Anyone else have similar stories?
