When were you hooked?

I was 11 years old and it was the early in 1981. I saw a thing on the news about a game that made people who were into heavy metal worship the devil.

That was the moment I was hooked.

I expect nothing less from you :p

Must have been some time in '82 for me, and exactly when I was hooked is debatable. It might have been as early as seeing the ads for D&D in Marvel comics of the time. ("Green slime!""Look out, it's dripping!")

Being stuck in a small village in Scotland meant that finding players was difficult, which is why both of my sisters have logged a fair few RPGing hours.

Hmm. Actually, I think when I really hooked was using the wax crayon to colour in the numbers on the dice. There's something magical about a d20 that you've coloured in yourself.

I was roughly 13 when I first started gaming. Unfortunately for me, it was Paladium run by one ridiculously bad DM. Despite this, I initially had a great deal of fun and have continued playing to this day.

Before I had even started playing. . .

The Mazes & Monsters TV movie helped hook me and my friend Eric - we started cooking up our own rules for a game before we had ever seen the rules - I remember painting a map of a series of caverns on the back of cut open paper bag and deciding which monsters went where and which were "harder to fight". . .

It was not until a few months later that I would actually get to play.

Oh, and I was 11 years old. . . (20 years ago this summer  )

I read everything I got my hands on as a kid, had a master story-teller of a teacher read us the entire "Hobbit" when I was in 3rd grade (8 years old), and then, a few years later, this game with a dragon on the front on top of a pile of treasure appeared, and I bought it. I was 12 then. I DM'd the original "Descent into the Unkown" for my friends while my mom baked chocolate-chip cookies for us. That was 26 years ago. :D

On my Franklin Ace 1500 computer, I played the DUNGEON! computer game. It was happily rocking my little 4th or 5th grade world. That summer, some old friends of my parents stopped by, with their kids who talked about this game called Dungeons & Dragons. And the kewl part was - you walk down the corridor, and there is a Dragon! a black one! They don't just wait in rooms! And come in more than two colors! How cool was that????

That Christmas, my parents got me the red box set of Basic D&D. Darn that Bargle for killing my cleric friend! I still remember, I killed him that first time through - rolled a nat 20 on my save vs. charm. And then looked to see what would have happened if I had missed... :)

And that mini dungeon - I loved it! Several times I started with that and improved / added to it. Ah, the rust monster - how I hated that thing!

But I do remember reading the part about Mages, and deciding that the stuff about only getting 1 or 2 spells just not making any sense, clearly it meant that they got Half at level one, and then the rest of them at level 2, and then half of the 2nd level spells at level 3, etc. Ah, the innocent joys of being in 5th grade.... :)

Mine isn't nearly as fun. I've always wanted to play, but I never had any friends that did. I finally started playing when I was 24 and I've been hooked for a year and a half. I friend at work was telling me about his halfling being almost eaten by a giant spider ( I was big into fantasy books, etc so this made perfect sense to me). I asked if I could play and I've missed 4 sessions in the last 18 months... :)
