When your game starts turning into Velveeta

Can you go into more details as to what problems exactly you are having and why they are problems. For example I'm not clear on exactly why having one word activate the spells on these plates is such a problem. If breaking them would activate them, then what prevents him from just dropping all of them at once.

Only problem with sonic is that the PCs put their plates in a Heward's Handy Haversack and a Bag of Holding, these being extra-dimensional items, I ruled that the plates are relatively free from danger until the sack or bag fails a save. So, looks like Mordenkainen will be taking on a few of my problems...

How can they activate the items from an extradimensional space? I mean, ok, they did that limited wish thing. But the plates aren't even in the correct world. This goes beyond "not having line of effect" (which they also don't have).

The first time they try to use this trick, I'd have it destroy the bag and everything inside.

I keep my players in line with one phrase "anything you can do, the NPCs can do." I like to reward PC inginuity and creativity by letting them reap the results of clever thinking and actions. However, if they start using things like 'broken rules' all the time, then the monsters will start using them too.

Seems I have allowed the cheese to get stacked too high, now lets see if I cant nuke it.

HEY! I call myself the Keeper of the Cheese, are trying to take the title from me?!

But on a serious note, if your characters start amassing great power through uses of Wish or by any other means, have some god get interested in them (and not in a good way). Make it very difficult for the characters to go a day without looking over their shoulders (or to the sky) in hopes that God So-and-So has other things to take care of for the day.

Then again, going back to square one, or level 1 in this case, is another good idea.

Byron's Ghost - They only carry them around, they haven't attempted to use them from their sack/bag and I think they always intended to retrieve the plates first... and for the haversack that is a free action IIRC.

painangreed - I have informed them of this as well (most recently in the case of the spell Spell Vulnerability from the Planar Handbook which someone else has a thread on).

Mista - Divine Intervention? Interesting you should bring that up... This group is currently mulling the idea of convincing an NPC to lobby its master, one of the two aspects of Demogorgon, to, get this, PAY THEM!... for foiling the other aspects plot. Pay them.? I mean seriously...? My idea of Demogorgon paying them is by, at best, letting them lead some raggedy band of Dretches into the Blood War!! Which sounds especially good to me right now.

I'd allow it. If word ever gets around about the tactic, have their next mage opponent hit them with a couple reciprocal gyres(from CArc). Enjoy watching the gloat drain off their faces.

It sounds like they will soon meet their demise. Of course, the other aspect of Demogorgon might show up while they are lobbying the NPC.

As in almost all these things, the solution is to sit down and talk to the players. You have to agree what kind of game you want to play. By looking for rules exploits, at least one player is simply failing to cooperate with you as a DM and moreoever as a person. You can put up with that and try to patch over it, but everyone will be much happier if you can get on the same page. Have you tried?

Nope. At least not in 3.5.

DMG said:
Retrieving any specific item from a haversack is a move action, but it does not provoke the attacks of opportunity that retrieving a stored item usually does.

It used to be a free action in 3.0.

So, two disks retrieved per round, max.
