Where are the rapiers?

I sort of thought that a rapier was a staple rogue weapon. Why would they not be skilled in a rapier? Does "Shortsword" Proficiency also include them? And if those proficiencies are for specific weapons, is 4e being reduced to just a dozen weapons?

It seems very unlikely there are only a few weapons - more likely those are weapon groups. I wouldn't be too sad if there were no rapier included - it certainly doesn't fit very well with the plate mail armour.

Well, since the only real difference between the rapier and the shortsword was the crit threat range (i.e. they are both light swords doing 1d6), and since crits are handled differently, I imagine that they are the same thing now.

It's also possible that rapiers are better than daggers and hence need a feat, akin to the exotic weapons before. Hopefully, the deal is then better than with the exotic weapons.

Cheers, LT.

You, my friend, fail at history.

That would make sense considering that fighting with rapiers require you to thrust and stab in order to be truly effective rather then slashing or chopping.

I would love to see an alternative rapier, which is the side-sword or cut-and-thrust sword. It is essentially the middle-ground between a rapier and a longsword so it can be used both as piercing and slashing weapon.

Plus it looks quite nice:

That's what I was thinking. A rapier could be one of those weapons that has an extra effect when it criticals - like the War Pick which has the high crit property that deals extra dice on a critical.
