Where did the animals go?

That seems extremely encouraging, Clark. Perhaps in 4e, the ToH will beat the actual Monster Manual for awesomeness again.

That'd be two editions in a row! :)

My actual guess is that they are saving more animals for future MMs, especially Post-Druid MM's.

And speaking of dinosuars:

Heroic: Animals
Paragon: Dire Animals
Epic: DINOSAURS.

Thanks, Clark. Animals are a huge part of my campaign too. The Kenzer Monster Manual had the best appendix for animals for 3.5. Hopefully you can do a bunch. Any chance you'll do a nice slew of dinosaurs? Those are also a huge part of my campaign...

Our Tome of Horrors 4E will have an appendix of animals. We will scale them from 1st to 10th level or so with some template-style abilites for each animal type so you can make them quickly. Some for normal vermin style animals like giant spiders and snakes and scorpions and such.

We got you covered.

Animals are a HUGE part of my campaigns. Always have been. And they are a core part of fantasy play in old school gaming, in my view. Heck, look at Conan for example. I cant count how many cats and apes and snakes and spiders he fought. And our old school JG Wilderlands campaign has tons of animals.

So, yes, Scott Greene and I immediately noticed there were not enough animals and we will fix that. There arent really any plants or classic fey either.

Clark

Apes! That's the big thing that's missing!

I'm actually relatively happy with the plants they chose -- treants, dryads, BATTLEBRIARS (heh), shambling mounds, and vine horrors are probably the most compelling plants out there, unless you count myconids.

Okay, maybe not the battlebriars...

Agreed, though epic-level dinosaurs will need some way to deal with flying PCs.

I kinda like the idea of an epic T-Rex knocking adventurers out of the sky with a deafening roar, come to think of it...

I do not miss the animals much, never used them as monsters myself. As in RL most animals, in most, situations would run away from a group of people. The only general exceptions would be the large hunting cats perhaps. (and sharks I guess)

Tigers, lions and sharks would have made sense to me... they should have definitely been in there (to join the bears, wolves and crocs)...

These are the only animals I consider consistently aggressive/unpredictable enough to be considered monsters (not withstanding Dire versions of course).

Something like this should work:

Or a stegosaurus that fires its tail spikes like a manticore. Might aid in bringing down flying opponents.

I have to agree I was disappointed in the low number of animals but then again, how much different is a tiger than a bear or a wolf stat wise. Minor tweaking me thinks.

Does the goblin ability look pretty bad ass to anyone else as a PC ability? Anytime somebody misses you, you shift one. It screams ranger to me.
