I'm at work, but I'm pretty sure that the blazing bones, electrum dragon, and dread are all from Ruins of Myth Drannor. The snow troll is from an issue of Dungeon. I think the talking bird and the singing tree are from an Al Qudiem supplement.

Welcome to the board, Kilimanjaro. I disagree on the electrum dragon. I seem to remember them making an early Dragon magazine appearance (something about filling out the metallics). They may have been used and possibly re-statted in Ruins of Myth Drannor, which would probably give Boz some extra work to track down both and compare for the one he wants.

Boz - I can help you out on some of these.

Abyss ants and giant nautilus - Dragon #193, "They Came from the Outer Planes," Randy Maxwell

Afanc - 1E MM2? I believe you are correct.

Campestri - Dungeon #41, "Old Man Katan and the Incredible, Edible Mushroom Band," Ted James Thomas Zuvich

Dragon, electrum - Dragon #74, "The Electrum Dragon," Ed Greenwood

Golem, brain and hammer - Dragon #193, "Live Statues and Stone Men," John Power

Lock lurker - Dragon #139, "Rare Beasts of the Forgotten Realms," Ed Greenwood

Magebane - Dragon #140, "More Rare Beasts of the Forgotten Realms," Ed Greenwood

Metalmaster - Dragon #139, "Rare Beasts of the Forgotten Realms," Ed Greenwood

Opinicus - 1E MM2? I think you're right.

Tuyewara - A tuyewara appeared in Dungeon #22, "The Leopard Men," by David Howery; this may be its first appearance.

Ulitharid - Dungeon #24, "Thunder Under Needlespire," James Jacobs

Wolf, dread, stone, and vampiric - Dragon #174, "Cry Wolf!" Tim Malto

Wraith, shimmering - Ah, this was a tricky one. The creature first appeared in Dungeon #26, "The Curse and the Quest," by Craig Barret and Christopher Kederich, but under the name "shimmering wrath." Reading the entries convinced me without a doubt that these two creatures are one and the same - much of the wording is exact.

Xantravar - Dragon #140, "More Rare Beasts of the Forgotten Realms," Ed Greenwood

Xaver - Dragon #94, "Creature Catalog II," Ed Greenwood

If they're the same Nightshades I'm familiar with (a version of which appears in the 3e MM), they come from one of the BD&D series box sets, probably the Master set but it might be the Companion set. They also appeared in the Mystara MC Appendix for AD&D.

richards, thanks yet again! :) the reason i asked on the afanc and opinicus is that i know that quite a lot of 1E MM2 monsters appeared in various modules and Dragon articles...

staffan, these particular nightshades are evil dwarf-like fey that use poison.

Hi Boz,

I can help with some of the creatures that Richards hasn't already covered.

The Afanc, Talking Bird and Singing Tree all appeared in the Al-Qadim products City of Delights as do the three parasites listed (the bloodring, wizard lice and vilirij).

The squeaker faerie, living steel and noran all appeared in Dragon Mountain.

The snow troll also appeared in Dungeon Magazine #43.

The Zombie Wolf appeared in the Ravenloft product Castles Forlorn, but it may have appeared earlier in a Dragon magazine.

ok cool, any more thoughts on the rest of these?

and did the afanc and opinicus appear anywhere before the 1E Monster Manual II (1983 version)? like a module or issue of Dragon?

blazing bones - ruins of myth drannor?
dread - ruins of myth drannor?
faerie, stwinger - MC11 fiend folio (1991)
nightshade - doom of daggerdale?
plant, vampire moss - ?
spectral wizard - ?
tuyewara - dungeon 22?
wolf, zombie - castles forlorn?
wraith, shimmering - dungeon 26?

I have a vague recollection of Blazing Bones being in Ruins of Zhentil Keep, but I might have that confused with Burning Bones or something like that.
