Where do DMs usually start out?

Was the first campaign you ran homebrew or published? (READ POST FIRST!!)

Thinking back over the various games I have run, the only ones that I have run in their "official" setting have been RuneQuest, Star Trek, and Over the Edge, and even these I tweaked to make them my own. For the most part I think I run homebrews because that is where I started from.

I've seen several references to RuneQuest, so I'll take the chance to say "Glorantha in that setting was cool!" It might well have been the best thing about the game. It took the flavor of the game and made it continent-spanning. Good stuff.

For me itr was always homebrew. When I first started with the black box, I made up a city to serve as a base and sketched out a crude map of the region. I know that doesn't quite count for the purposes of this poll, but almost immediately from the start it was always my own world. After learning how to DM and set up a campaign, I almost always ran worlds of my own creation.
 

Started with B2. No world concept. When my teeth were cut, I drew up a world map, and dropped the players in. Not much of a world concept there either.

I didn't really build a world until I started running 3.0 in 2001. Then I built one from the ground up, and it was very satisfying, until I got burned out on 3.5.

Only recently have a run a published campaign. Last year, I ran an old-school basic/expert known world game. In January, I started a 1e classic GH game.

Would you consider those who played extensively in the setting of B2 Keep on the Borderlands to have been playing homebrew or campaign setting? B2 is kind of a mini-campaign setting.
 

My first campaign was in 1980 and was a homebrew. The map was a combination of features from the modules I used at the time plus my own evil wizard's dungeon. There was the Keep from B4, but it had changed owners and the territory map was different. I would suspect that a lot of people with homebrews had bits and pieces of published settings incorporated into their framework.
 

When I started DMing in 1981, my friends and I just ran adventure after adventure, B1, B2, L1, all the good old standards. After we got a bit older and started to understand the idea of a campaign world, I decided that since we had just been going from place to place without much connection, that matched the idea of an island world. So our world became a bunch of disconnected islands. It was great fun, with all kinds of warring fiefdoms, and the PCs always having to steal a boat if they wanted to get anywhere. Much fun with stowaways, vengeful rightful owners, slaad cargo, etc.

Much later, around 1988-89, the party finally managed to undo an old archmage's wish and raise one continent from where it had sunk. Of course, the displaced water inadverently swamped half the coastal cities on the islands, and so the PCs became the world's number one most hated, they had to flee to the new continent and found a new city in the bizarre wilderness, ah, those were fun times.
 

I started out with a patchwork homebrew. It wasn't really Greyhawk or anything, just some nonsensical homebrew world that I made up as I went along. I started playing in 1997 or 98. Funny enough, we all started with homebrew worlds.

Planescape was the first published campaign world I played in and that only lasted a few games because... well, the campaign wasn't very good (not a knock at PS, but the GM running PS). The first adventure was really fun, but it sort of devolved into a nonsensical mess in the subsequent games.
 

I began playing D&D in about '83 with the red box, played random D&D adventures for years, including several set in the Known World, and I drew a map of a homebrew world that was a total rip-off of the Kown World.

But the first real campaign that I ever ran was set in the Forgotten Realms, starting with the grey box about a year after it was put out (and hence voted published setting). I ran another Realms campaign in college, and a Dark Sun one.

During 1998-2000 I was living in Seattle away from the rest of my gaming group here in Boston and since I wasn't running anything I started to work on a homebrew for future use. I've been using it exclusively during the 3e years except for a Dark Sun mini-campaign and playing occasionally in other peoples games.

I started my first real campaign in 1998 at the age of 14.
