I'm playing in two groups right now. Our bi-weekly Friday game is at my place in a dedicated gaming room. My Saturday group meets at a buddies house and we play in his basement.

i always vet new people in a public place because we play at people's homes.

Here in South Florida it is hard to find public places to play. Most of the gaming shops don't have the room for private games. The libraries don't allow gaming.

I know that sometimes people have used their club house if they have one at the condo complex that they live at. I have played at the local university if a player is a student there.

Right now we rotate between three people's home. By game is run at my one friends house on Saturday night. It was the deal he cut with his wife that she wants the freedom to go do things on Saturday evening and so he is in charge of the kids.

My roommate game is usually played at one of the players apartments it is small and we don't have a table but he always cooks for us. Sometimes we play at the other guy's house and that is great he has a nice dining room table. But his wife can be bitchy about it if we do it to often.

I have to say the bulk of games has always been at someone's house.

Currently I work for a uni, so I can book teaching rooms after hours and use them as game rooms for the night/weekend. Good set up really, we get a white board free pens, projector against one of the walls. Lots of table space too if we decide to do 4e or some other game that requires a map/grid.

The vast majority of the time, it is at my house, or that of one of my players. Usually dining room, but with renos last summer, I now have a separate room for games and crafts.

For a brief couple of years when I was in grad school, we played in empty classrooms of the University, but that was due to none of us having very large apartments.

Currently, we meet in the house of three of our players (a married couple and the wife's brother).

My prior group had half as many people, and none of us could (for various reasons) use our places of residence as our dedicated gaming area. Instead, we went to one building at the locale university - on a weekend - and tried the doors until we found one that was unlocked, a tactic which succeeded over 90% of the time. Then we'd game in a basement classroom.

If that didn't work, we'd usually try a local library, but that never once worked for us. Actual organizations were given preferential treatment in terms of reserving them, and they were always full anyway, so we couldn't even be walk-ins.

I've played at the store I own for almost 20 years. Before that, someone's house. Frankly, someone's parent's house. We scratched my Mom's antique table and gouged groves in her hardwood floors. (Gamers have a tendency to tip their chairs back)

We rotate between the players' houses (I've found that it's generally too much effort to combine the roles of DM and host).

For a short while I played at work after hours with a group of colleagues, but otherwise, in all my years of gaming, it's been at someone's house.

Generally at my house as I've got most gaming supplies at hand.

Sometimes at other player's houses if there's a good reason to do so (e.g. "I'm ill, but still want to play, can you guys come over?")

I GM and play at the London D&D Meetup, which meets in pub function rooms - an upstairs or side room of a pub. We meet at pubs which let us meet regularly & don't charge a booking fee.

Playing RPGs in pubs seems to be common in England, pub culture especially in southern England is generally amenable to clubs and societies. If playing in a public taproom it can attract attention from other pub-goers, curious rather than hostile IME: "Oh, I used to play that game!" :)

Before my son was born I used to host games at home. This has certain advantages and can allow for more in-depth roleplay than you tend to get in a pub(lic) game, but generally I find that playing in pubs works very well, both for the neutral venue and for the beer. I haven't GM'd or played in a home for 5 years, it's always been at a pub.

Hm, I never thought of that - I think I'd be slightly embarrassed if my students found me running a D&D game in a lecture room! :)
