IIRC a big turn out on a thread like this depends on a certain amount of competition. If made early in the day and the western hemisphere doesn't chime in too much, sometimes the eastern hemisphere jumps in and tries to show that they are a majority. If they do take over significantly in the numbers, or even threaten dominance, then the next day (by the western hemisphere clock) the western hemisphere turns out in larger numbers. Etc. We'll see how the turning of the world effects this poll...
