Where the Sun Never Shines: My New Campagain

Sporemine

First Post
I have begun work on my new campagain, Where the Sun Never Shines.

The basic idea of the campagain is a strange world where the sun is on the inside of the planet (a hollow shell). Large groups of people live on the inside of this shell. Because of this the entire inner planet is bathed in eternal light.

Therein lies the problem. Monsters have nowhere to seek refuge (no dark corners) but the outer, darker side of the planet. And monsters, being monsters, go through massive dungeons connecting the two sides to raid, pillage, destroy, etc. Many of them also choose to live in these massive dungeons, or smaller ones that just dent the surface of the world.

This leads to adventurers of all races and professions testing their mettle against monsters of the other side, constantly battling to keep the inner earth safe for those who inhabit it. Due to the constant battle, of course, guilds have formed. One of these guilds is housed in a large castle, constantly recruiting new members. This guild is called the House of all seeing eyes. Wether the PCs come here on their own or are brought to it by one of the guild's many agents, that is up to the PCs to decide, along with backstories and motivations.

That is where it begins.

I will soon be posting a map of the first quest, along with several encounters. Attached is a basic picture of the dungeon, without anything added.

Kudos

sounds kinda like a more expansive under-dark and sounds pretty awesome.

A few sources you might look into for ideas:

manual of the planes, specifically the parts regarding the outer layer of the nine hells.

Rather obscure source, the Elder evils book from 3.5 father llymic section (he puts out the sun and various effects take place.

I'll post more sources if I can think of them.

You could have some sort of 'moon' that rotates around the sun or they both spin around each other. This would provide areas of dimmness where creapy things happen. Heck if they spinn slow enough it could even create seasons inside the Hollow World. I forget how much was in that book, lest I could even find it.

The sun is the core of the hollow world. It has several moons orbiting it, causing massive areas of darkness as they pass over the land. All the monsters of the world, avoiding the light, live on the vast, cold, outer part of the world, only following massive dungeons to the surface when the moons pass over, obscuring the sunlight and creating long periods of darkness. When monsters have arrived, they tear portals in the fabric of space, allowing larger entities from the hells and the abyss to storm into the world, spreading chaos and destruction.

Malos:
Malos is a clockwork fortress, linked to mechanis via portal. It is an important stronghold shielded in the passing darkness caused by the moons.
The link to mechanis was created by inevitables from the other side. They were seeking a base of operations in the inside of the hollow world to destroy the creatures of chaos that find their way through the portals. The leader of the stronghold, Saan Malos, is a powerful wizard that first opened the portals to mechanis, requesting help from the forces of order. They agreed.

These are my new campagain notes.

Also, some monsters for the first quest, involving closing a small portal which was left over from the last moon passing. This is mainly some of the original raiders and local wildlife that has been twisted by the energies of the portal.

This is the "final boss" of the cave. It's a giant mutated cow.

This appears to be nearly identical to the old Mystara Hollow World setting from the early-to-mid-80s. Mystara was a B/X and BECMI setting and Hollow World might have been BECMI only, can't remember.

In any case, cool campaign concept. I will say that the name leaves something to be desired though: ever hear the expression "Stick it where the sun don't shine"? :)

I decided to wander over here from your "design a monster" thread.

Firstly, CAMPAGAIN? Hehe... you mean CAMPAIGN. You've now trained your fingers to type it incorrectly every time. ;)

Bessy

Bessy... very cool. Why is her basic attack a kick rather than a gore? Then again, maybe a female cow doesn't have horns.

With her charge attack, why not make the secondary attack vs Fortitude? Just a suggestion; Reflex is also appropriate. Also, shouldn't Bessy be a brute? I'm also interested in your reason for the bonus to opportunity attacks.

Monsters

If the monsters come from the dark surface of the world how then does that change them? Would all monsters have darkvision? Does the surface have an atmosphere? If not, do the monsters need to breathe? Is the surface ice cold without a sun? If so, do all monsters have cold resistance and maybe vulnerability to fire?

Maybe too many questions but I love designing things to some sort of underlying logic so that the players, once they uncover the logic, can make intelligent choices.
