D&D 5E Where Would You Build A Domain in FR?

As the title says. You are a higher level PC and you want to lead 100-200 odd mercs and 3 r 4 of your 9th level+ PCs and build a keep.

Myself I would probably be looking at the Greypeak Hills. Llorkh has been destroyed by Stone Giants (Storm Kings Thunder). so you could rebuild that town, a new one nearby or rule the area I suppose.

If there are still no good-sized towns on the River Chionthar between Elturel and Baldur's Gate, then right there along the river. Set up a nice keep with room for a town to service the trade going up and down the river, and start raking in the cash from protection money extorted lawful taxes raised from the merchant traffic along the river. I tend to set my FR campaigns in a homebrew town I've created in that area...

I'm not sure if it's an ideal location but the current party I DM is building one on the site of the Redbrand Hideout in Phandalin. They are having the mansion demolished but keeping and renovating the basement area the Redbrand's used. The Keep is being built above that. They got an investor in a retired Assassin who will be allowed to run a martial training academy in the keep.

One of my players actually had an arc about this back in 3rd edition, he was a blackguard who eventually ended up constructing a fortress in the Sea of Falling Stars on one of the more habitable islands. Years later that player was the DM and ran a campaign with his character's descendants as the chief antagonists residing in said fortress. It was a nice throwback I thought, though no doubt enhanced by personal nostalgia.

I'd go to the far east and retake Citadel Rashemar. Its the crossing point for the Golden Way, so there's a lot of richesses coming from trades between kara-tur and the sea of Fallen Stars.

Both banks of River Rauvin between Everlund and Sundabar and extending the domain into High forest as much as wood elves would allow and to the north into Nether mountains.

Hrm…there’s plenty of space and heroes needed up in the Bloodstone Lands. Either that or somewhere in the Unapproachable East, like Aglarond. But if I could find the space there, Waterdeep would be tops. Plenty to do there.

My players took over the location of Nightstone and rebuilt that as their keep and headquarters, slowly promoting and rebuilding the settlement.

I mean, the previous owner was dead, and let's face it, there weren't many left to argue the point.

I would say on the western limits of the trollclaws. Build a keep and a bridge. Therefore the commerce between BG and Waterdeep would stop passing through trollclaws ford.

Nice terrain to the west, less trolls and the traders would leave money in the new settlement
