Which Artificer is the best?

First Post
This is my first time in a forum, so be gentle.
I play 3.5 and have done it for some years now.

But now I have grown tired of kicking ass and blasting things to pieces.
So my question is - which Artificer is the best when you want want to make magical items/constructs. Eberron or Mongoose? Or is there a better one, I havn´t heard of?

First, welcome to the boards!

Second, I don't have any familiarity with the Mongoose Artificer, so I can't compare it.

That said...

The Artificer is pretty tasty, but its not the only way to get that kind of PC.

1) Any caster can pile up Item creation feats and an arsenal of alchemical weapons, for instance. Don't forget the alchemical items from the Planar Handbook.

2) In addition, the Effigy Master 5-level PrCl (CompArc p30) deals with spellcasters who create various kinds of Contstructs. (I don't have all of the Eberron stuff, but its possible that the Artificer qualifies for it- there would need to be an infusion that mimics Simulacrum.)

3) Depending upon how "open" the campaign is, you might also want to look at the Iron Kingdoms Arcane Mechanik (steampunk crafter mage) and Bodger (quick fix engineer & jury-rigger).

4) In a similar vein, Etherscope offers the Enginaughts (steampunk bionic men & women).

5) Sword & Sorcery's Chaositech is full of fantasy tech that you'd probably love.

6) In a similar vein, Arsenal and Factory by Perpetrated Press are both out of print, but you may find them inspirational.

7) You might also want to track down Polyhedron #151, which featured a 3Ed Spelljammer mini-campaign. It should have some useful info.

8) Last, but not least, the games Dragonstar and Dragonmech are both D20 sci-fantasy games that may be of use to you.

I took a closer look at Chaositech- there are 2 PrCls that are "tech" related, the Chositechnician and the Machine Mage.

Another Sword and Sorcery product, When the Sky Falls, has the Astroengineer PrCl that might also work for you.

Danny, Danny, Danny...

I own EVERY product you mentioned on your shopping list except for When The Sky Falls.

There was/is another product available from the EnWorld store that dealt with Artificers... I own it but IDHTBIFOM. Dang.

The World of Warcraft d20 game has tinkerer and engineering rules, which I found pretty cool and well done. It's one of the only systems that gave an actual subset of rules for an item crafter who wants to actually focus on crafting.

Also, the Steam Knight PrC and the steam armor stuff was a hell of a lot better then the warjack stuff in Warmachine.

Really, if you want to make a character based on magitek or steam-based power armor, I'd give the books a look.
