The 3e game designers appear to over-value abilities which cannot easily be taken away. The Monk class is as under-powered as it is because a monk is very independent of magic items--sure, like all classes, they do better with items, but unlike other classes, their effectiveness does not take a huge dive if you manage to divest them of a weapon or divine focus or spell component pouch or instrument or animal companion or what not.

Which is all well and good if your campaign features an awful lot of "You get stripped of all of your belongings and have to escape from a dungeon naked" situations, but that's not most people's experience.

Generally speaking, most groups may have had fun once with a "You don't have any spell components and need to rummage through the farmhouse to see what you can improvise" type of scenario, but consider themselves satisfied to leave that play style alone.

Unfortunately, what I would consider the core balancing principle behind the monk ("Here's a class that is more powerful than the rest of the party if everyone's naked, but less powerful when everyone's fully equipped, so equal on average.") meshes badly with one of the challenge balancing principle that became more explicit in 3e ("We assume everyone is fully equpped, and we even define what we mean by that.")

Monk.

I've yet to have seen a useful monk in any of our games.

Now if it was a monk in, let's say, Henry's game from NC Game Day.... I'd say differently. 1e monks kicked ass!! But 3e monks kick.... well.... NOTHING.

The Ranger. A fighter can more than make up for him. His spells arent that great or usefull and his animal companion is a joke.

I'm amazed the monk is behind the bard.

Monk
1: Mediocre bab (Flurry just gives you more opportunity to miss)
2: Mediocre HP
3: Mediocre skills
4: Mediocre AC
5: Abilities that are useless to others

Bard
1: Mediocre bab
2: Low HP
3: Decent skills
4: Mediocre AC
5: Useful abilites (Healing/Buffing)

They're both worthless fighters but the bard can actually help others. Yes other classes do support better than a bard, but other classes do a better job of fighting than a monk. If I'm going to have a lousy combatant in the party you may as well have the one thats capable of doing other things. :p

I thought the poll was about which class was most useless? Not Which class is the most usless in combat or as a fighter? :\

I almost went ranger, since they're like the bard of the druid/fighter/rogue set. But instead I ultimately agree with Darklone:

Clerics are useless. Come on, who needs a class with full spellcasting, armor, healing and fighting? Plus Turn Undead.
This game requires everyone (adventuring party, good guys, bad guys... everywhere) to have a cleric! Stupid! Think of how much better this game would be without them! The greater variety of party composition! yay

so yeah, I hate clerics. Wish they were gone, or at least replaced with Adepts.

They can't do anything but fight, and then they're not even that amazing at fighting.

Riiiight. When a 6th level character can dish out 100+ HP of damage with one swing using a core-only build I don't think I would go so far as to say they're "not even that amazing at fighting".

I voted monk. Never seen one in a game last more than 3-4 sessions before it bit the big one. Never seen one do something the other characters couldn't have done.
