Which D&D Novels to buy?

HellHound said:
I'm looking specifically for D&D novels because she has already exhausted much of my teen & pre-teen fantasy novels...

All the McAffrey books.
All the Loyd Alexander books.
All the Narnia books.
Lord of the Rings & the Hobbit.
My Belgariad set.
About half the Myth series by Mr Asprin.
And she's started on the Shannara novels now.

And she somehow skipped the Earthsea trilogy?

I'd also suggest the Arylin Moonblade Forgotten Realms books by Elaine Cunningham. I don't think there's anything inappropriate in there. There's a strong female main protagonist, action, G-rated romance and so on.

I also liked the Wyvern's Spur trilogy. It's not very violent, has a male protagonist but he's more of the entertainingly silly upper class twit than the hypercompetant warrior with the mighty muscles or anything like that and has (Olive?) the halfling thief, er, Bard who gets turned into a donkey for a while with entertaining results. Thinking about it, its kinda like a "Jeeves and Wooster" story set in the Forgotten Realms. The first book can be read alone as I recall. There is one thing you will probably have to explain though: One of the running gags in the book is that there are no halfling bards. This is a D&D in-joke as these books were written when 2nd edition was current and there were no halfling bards then. This one will go right over the head of someone raised on 3e.

Fantasy for women...

D&D Books:

If she loves elves then she should definitely read Elaine Cunningham's Elfshadow. I wouldn't read on beyond that though.

I also loved the Moonshae trilogy, by Douglas Niles, when I was her age, but the sequel trilogy is a little weak.

General Fantasy:
And if she hasn't started Mercedes Lackey then now is a great time to introduce her to Valdemar. It's also close

Comics:
Elfquest, elfquest, elfquest. One of the best American comic series ever. Especially the first 6 volumes.

Try also:

Mary Stewart's Crystal Cave series

Marion Zimmer Bradley Mists of Avalon series

edit: strong female characters by good female authors. role models but not in the Charles Barkley sense. ;)

The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon needs to be mentioned as well. These are very well-done books in an obviously D&D-inspired world, and Paks, a female Paladin, is an excellent role model for girls.

I'd also recommend the Earthsea books by LeGuin.
