Which god for my paladin?

I'd say go with Garl Glittergold. Have your rescuers be gnomes and so you devote yourself to their patron god. Give yourself a dead pan demeanor but make efforts to make jokes as a religious duty, even though they come out with affectless straight man delivery and fail painfully each time.

I always felt he lacked some of Helm's...better qualities.

If Helm's got any good qualities, he's doing an awesome job of hiding them!

Man that takes me back. Did they ever update the Quasi-Deity Murlynd from 1st ed. Greyhawk?

I believe that one of the Living Greyhawk Journals covered the Quasi-Deities.

Note, however, that he's not "core." The Core Deities are all Greyhawk deities, but the Greyhawk deities aren't necessarily core.
