Which god for my paladin?

Growing up hearing the tale of how he came to be, he decided to become a paladin, to avenge wicked deeds and dedicate himself to the cause of justice. Not so much a vigilante, but to get the guys that slip outside of the law; capturing them when possible and slaying them when not.

So, with that backstory laid out, what god from the standard D&D set would seem to be most appropriate? I think Heironeous is a bit played out as the god of all paladins, so who would be the next best choice for this character concept? I don’t even mind going to a nonhuman god like Bahamut, Mordain, or Yondalla if those will get the job done. Pelor is popular among the party, but I don't know if that god is LG (but if Pelor takes LG characters, that could work just fine).

Nothing says "burned out cop looking to bust crooks" like Saint Cuthbert.

well, st. cuthbert did immediately resonate with me, and it seems to be the popular choice as well. ;) pelor is a close second, and there are already a few pelorites in the party already.

I'd say go with Garl Glittergold. Have your rescuers be gnomes and so you devote yourself to their patron god. Give yourself a dead pan demeanor but make efforts to make jokes as a religious duty, even though they come out with affectless straight man delivery and fail painfully each time.

This is for a one shot, right? No? Then never mind, it might be too much for a long term character.

Voady,

I think this is a long term game, not a one shot.

Boz,

Honestly St. Cuthbert is your guy. There's no two ways about it, you want to mete out justice to lawbreakers, St. Cuthbert's your guy.

You got a lot of Pelorites, eh? Then Mayaheine, the Shield Maiden, is probably a good call. I mean, she's got a close tie to Pelor, so you're in the good books there, but you're still a bit different from everyone else.

Plus, she is already a patron of paladins. And she has that whole "Shield and Longsword" bit. I'm actually a huge fan of the deity - she's been ported into my Homebrew as a saint.

yeah, i'm pretty much sold. :) if the DM says no, i'll go with Pelor for the whole group togetherness thing. ;)

I can't disagree with the consensus: 'Bert's the way to go, here. As the result of a heinous crime, he'll be drawn to a god of Retribution like flies to light.

Pity you don't play in the Realms. I always liked Hoar, god of revenge, retribution, poetic justice. I guess you can still adapt the last part into your code of conduct as a cleric of St. Cuthbert, if you want:

If you overthrow a tyrant who starved his subjects to death, feed his corpse to the pigs, so he will feed someone in death. A slaver should be caught alive in most cases, since he should lose his freedom and rot in a cell.

If your DM says no to St. Cuthbert, slap him around and say "St. Cuthbert smites you for your ignorance!"

Kae'yoss,

I like Hoar too but I preferred him as his aspect in the Uther panethon, Assuran. In any case Hoar is..decent. But I always felt he lacked some of Helm's...better qualities.

Wik,

Some of us do like Mayaheine as well. But truly it looks like Boz's character is all about the smiting! ;)

Quartz,

I think as I said to Wik, he (Boz) wants to smite and smite heavily and often! ;)
