Which Greyhawk?

Which variants of Greyhawk would you buy?

I'd be happy with any new Greyhawk material on the line of either Gygax or Paizo. There is no significant conflict between the two, except that From The Ashes, etc. passed between them. The Paizons have worked very hard to undo the damage of that god-awful era, even if they couldn't simply wipe it from the face of the Earth.

In my Greyhawk campaign(s), the Greyhawk Wars never happened, and Rary and Robilar never betrayed the others. Most big events that have passed are unique to our campaign. Still, I have no trouble making use of an old Gygax adventure, the LGG, or a Paizo Adventure Path. Heck, it looks likely that we will soon revive an old campaign that featured the Temple of Elemental Evil in the 90's, and we'll finish it by running the Age of Worms.

As for the rules, I never intend to go back to 1st ed.

I have the GH maps from Dungeon and do what i want with them, which involves a lot of Dungeon adventures so you could call it Paizohawk (but i won't).

I will buy anything with the Greyhawk label on it. So I voted for everything (except the "I hate Greyhawk" alternative). Of course, that doesn't mean I will *use* it in my Greyhawk game. But I'm enough of a fan to buy anything published for/about Greyhawk.

A good poll question might be "would the label Greyhawk on a product make you more inclined to buy it, choosing it over similar available options with no Greyhawk label".

Of course, the follow-up to that question is "how much would you be upset if the Greyhawk content of said product didn't meet your expectations". :)

I have bought the 1e folio, the 1e boxed set, the 2e From the Ashes, and the 3e LGG. I expect I will pick up some paizo GH as I continue to buy pdfs of Dragon and Dungeon, and I might be interested in other greyhawk stuff, such as a possible 4e campaign setting, 3e Expedition to Castle Greyhawk, Castles and Crusades Yggsburg stuff, etc.

I find it odd, almost comical, that so many people support Paizohawk (which includes references to FtA) while only a small fraction of those people also support FtA.

Speaking for myself, I liked all versions of Greyhawk (including From the Ashes), but I already have them all except for for a Paizohawk version (I have the adventure paths, but no comprehensive look at the world). Therefore I have no need to buy the older versions yet again. Plus, I think any solution that turns back the clock is a clunky one.

I just can't get in to post '83 WORLD OF GREYHAWK stuff. The 2e stuff that was designed to wreck the campaign world is awful (and I have a copy of PUPPETS I've been meaning to burn that proves the awfulness), and the post 2e stuff was created to try and fix that awfulness.

If 3rd edition rules WORLD OF GREYHAWK info basically looked at everything after Gary's departure and said "It was all a dream. Never happened. Alternate reality.", I'd be all about it. But in going forward, yes, they assumed things like GREYHAWK WARS and other silliness was valid canon.

That, IME, was a mistake, and it taints the whole campaign.

So I stick with what I have.

The fallacy within that thinking lies within the probability (however small) that the two only share a collective 20% of voters between them (42% voting for Gygax but not Paizo, 38% voting for Paizo, but not Gygax, and 20% voting for both). Such a distribution would not indicate any form of consensus. I would not find it very surprising if something like that happened. Paizo is after all, the new 'hawk and many who came to the game in 3e know nothing of Gygax 'hawk. Many old grognards refuse to convert. What I am not sure about is whether there are many grognards who use Paizohawk background with Gygaxhawk rules.

It's not an anonymous poll, so if you really really wanted to know, you could look at each response, put it in Excel, and calculate exactly probability of overlap for each combination of types of 'hawk.

But MOST people like Gygax 'hawk and MOST people like Mona 'hawk. So, more from Erik Mona and Paizo, with Gygax feel, would be appreciated by most 'hawkers.

Nod, very similar to my own views and uses of Greyhawk materials. I run 3.5e, for what it's worth, but I've run Greyhawk in AD&D and 3.0 also. For 2nd Edition, I was out of the game entirely (1992-1996) or running AD&D.
