Samwise Gamgee, for all the reasons mentioned above. He is one of my favorite characters in all literature. Loyal to the end, rarely complains, keeps his positive attitude in the face of even the worst of fates.

Nice wording for a poll, by the way. Not who is coolest, but which you would aspire to be like.

So far I am quite pleased with Sean Astin's portrayal.

Well really, Faramir (but that's the book not the movie and he's not in the poll). So Aragorn it is--again, the book version not the movie version.

As for Faramir, he does what is right and he does it knowing that the consequences may not be good for himself. Knowing that he could have the ring for himself or his father, he lets it go. Even though his father cursed him for letting the ring escape, he rode out to meet the Nazgul and to rally the defenses of Osgiliath. Even though he could have retreated faster, and left his men to the Nazgul, as they retreated to Minas Tirith, he stayed behind to ensure that as many of his men as possible escaped. Similarly, though he could possibly have held onto power in Gondor, he gave it up to the rightful heir.

At least in the movie, definitly Aragorn.

To stay faithful forever, when you know in your heart she has already left for the west, thats a hard thing to do. And to be able to kick huge amounts of orc butt on the side, along with being ruggedly handsome and fit, AND to do the right thing and take the power granted you, although you know what happened to the last who did, AND to resist the ring successfully, and to be a good friend to little hobbitses, AND to chill out wiht an elf and a dwarf, well, that is something to aspire to indead.

Is there anything cooler than jumping on a troll's head and shooting him in the brain between your feet? It may seem like a simple (or simpleton's) reason, but damn was that cool!

You left out the 10th member of the Fellowship. He travelled almost the whole way with the fellowship, and was the one who actually achieved the mission.

I want to be Smeagol.

He got a REALLY cool birthday present and then lived 5x his expected lifespan. If it wern't for some thieving Bagginses he would have lived allot longer to. I'm a night person already, and an all sushi diet is good for your health. Gollum, Gollum.

Plus how many get to see the the inside of the Lugburz (aka the Dark Tower or Barad-dur) as well as "Her" lair and get to roam middle earth again. The Dark Lord doesn't let just any old prisoner free, you have to be special don't you my precious. Gollum, Gollum.

Gandalf, but only because Sauron was not a member of the Fellowship.

But Sauron was a member of the Fellowship. Remember The One Eye and The One Ring are just different parts of one whole. The whole fellowship is named for him.
