Banewarrens

What you want is Banewarrens. It starts at 6th level, but go ahead and get it and you can either think about inserting it into your current game or getting the PCs to Ptolus. Lots of support over at Monte Cook's site. It has combat and RP opportunity. Great source book/mega adventure.

Do not purchase Dungeon World. Stay away from it. I got it at a Con for next to nothing with the idea I would canabalize pieces from it. It was so bad I wound up giving it away to charity, and felt guilty about that.

Freeport stuff is always good, but I have heard many people say that Blacksails was a little railroady but YMMV as always. It is intended to follow up on some of the other Freeport Stuff, in fact you might be better off running some of those, adjusting the levels a little for your group or setting.

Have never seen, or really heard of, the others you mention. But I am willing to bet Banewarrens stands above them.

May I suggest my own "World of Whitethorn 1B: The Village of Oester"? It's actually on a special sale until today at $9.59 (from $15.99) and you can get FREE Priority Mail shipping on any order $25 or more. It's for levels 3-5 and has a small dungeon, lots of special encounters, great NPCs, outdoor settings, a town, and a regional history. It's gotten great reviews and was nominated for a 2004 ENnie as "Best Adventure of the Year".

What to buy

I have the world largest Dungeon by AEG. Totally recomend (dont count spelling here)
Without a doubt very easy to mod or even "cut" up for your personal style

I voted for Black Sails as I've had a good history with other Green Ronin Freeport mods -- they're loosely themed enough that you can stick a whole host of other mods right in the middle of 'em without breaking a sweat. If I were to try to DM a big mod right now, that'd probably be the one.

As a player in Banewarrens for 6 hours now, I'm not wildly impressed by it -- the writing is good with adjectives, but certain elements
like the shock trap that uses electricity in a technological fashion with no save (since when?)
seem out of place in the world that the characters know. Also don't care much for the ham-handedness of Ptolus, but that may also just be the DM -- who has mandated that we can't be evil specifically because he doesn't want us using the toys that we're picking up. (So I load up on Use Magic Device which he then deems does nothing. Thanks, DM! :p ) Anyway, it seems like it might be a good fit for -- at a guess -- an Eberron campaign, but I wouldn't recommend it for a newbie DM that has trouble reacting to what the PCs are doing with the fun toys they're picking up.

I really enjoyed running through the old adventure path module "The Forge of Fury", probably the best of them IMHO.

PS DaveMage - Could you please pick a different picture of Gandalf? Shilsen uses the exact same picture only slightly larger.

No. :)

(At least, not until I have a "design my avatar" contest with the winner getting all kinds of cool stuff.)

That's because it's one of the forum avatars rather than a specific, custom avatar. Probably all kinds of people use it, it's just that most of them don't post very often. ;)

D'oh! You beat me to my joke! I was going to specifically recommend not buying Henry. He comes with all those wives; I think the upkeep is quite expensive. Darkness might be nice, but that depends on how well you know your place; you don't want to bump into stuff you can't see anymore. I believe Piratecat comes with a litter box, and he will tend to bring home "booty" which is always a good thing. Creamsteak... I'd pass, thanks. :D

Beat me too.

But I definitely recommand buying Hypersmurf. That way, you don't have to carry your books around, he knows them all by heart. Piratecat could be interesting as you could use him as a DM, but he's unreliable in this regard (cf. Of Sound Mind 2 & 3).
