As tempting as it is for me to just say 'any monster book, monster ecology book, and anything with a drop of planar material in it', I'll stick with, in general, anything that is primarily fluff and flavor text rather than being chock full of crunch and rules.

My reason? Come any future edition, I want books that will still be useful under altered rules, rather than being completely and wholly useless under a changed system of game mechanics.

"Tearing the monsters out of the ELH and keeping just them" should be an option as well.

I don't want to live in a world without the Worm that Walks and the various abominations, but I don't want to live in a world with Union, either. Gah, the paradox!

UA, XPH, SS, in that order. SS wasn't great but there was some stuff I've used quite a bit, and had some great monster games that I wouldn't trade away for anything.

Actually I find it more interesting which books were NOT on the list. A bit real-world, a nice change of pace from all the theoretical polls.

For me, not many would stay.

Psionics books for sure, as I love Psionics.

PHBII because it is just perfectly balanced between new and old players

MMII and MMIII as I consider both to be very very solid

After that I really don't need the rest and own almost none of them, though I have read quite a few.

If I didn't own them all? ;)

If starting today I probably would avoid most 3.0 books like Epic Level handbook, Arms and Equipment guide, etc...
