Interesting, not quite the responses I was expecting, perhaps because the examples were poorly worded.

So as not to spoil it for further voters.

So as to not skew any others...

[sblock]I wonder if you were to ask,

Option 1: Lords of the Rings
Option 2: Conan

If we would see the same responses?

Both pretty generic, but the first seemed to have more shape to it, while the second was more a setting; I couldn't see the campaign in it.

i voted for two.

a ragtag group of heroes versus the world sounds pretty good.

a war is something that is rarely fun to play through, because even a 20th level character rarely can actually turn the tide of a battle involving hundreds of more likely thousands of combatants on both sides. even a superhighlevel fighter will be taken out by 100 1st level warriors who want him down. a wall of soldiers tackling him and then stealing his sword and using it on him while he's held down by 8 guys equals a terrible end to a legendary fighter. a wizard of that level will just get peppered with arrows for two rounds and die like an inside out porcupine. unless you're a military strategist and are using a system that's built for mass combat, then a war is no place to be a pc.

As a GM, the 2nd options provides more opportunities to customize and tailor the campaign for my play style and gaming group.

Both are a little generic, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, although having some unique element that seperates the setting from others would be a good thing IMHO.

;)

Definitely, there are vibes of those in both options. They were intentionally generic for that reason; not QUITE filing the serials off, but they were templates rather than full campaign ideas or settings.

Just an unofficial check on which "genre" of D&D seems more popular...

I too voted option two.

Thinking about it, my answer might change depending on additional factors. I assumed this was to be an open ended campaign. OTOH, if it's a closed campaign with a real world time limit (say - one school year or something like that) then I'd probably lean towards option 1.

Option 1, for me, is a tighter campaign. Which is great if you want that. I think most people though, including myself, start campaigns with the (probably vain) hope that the campaign will keep on going into the future.

So, if there are no time limits or other constraints, and the group is not interested in exploring particular themes, then option 2 is likely better for me.

Option 2 looks like Dark Sun / Conan general campaign setting, whereas option 1 was presented as ready to go campaign. And a campaign that was played over and over again for years by many players, told by countless books etc. Generic as both might be, second one was simply abused less, so there's still some freshness in it.
