Assuming that the rights for The Hobbit can be obtained (which is actually being negotiated for at the moment), which of these two (and only these two) directors would you have directing it (assuming that both were able and willing)?

As both choices have experience directing at least one fantasy-based film, also explain why you chose the way you did. :)

I don't think Peter Jackson is the greatest director for the job. He's a Kiwi. I'm living in New Zealand right now, and I'm wondering if that's the real reason he got the job--because everyone else was too expensive. That's not to say I think he's a bad director, but I'm sure he's going to be burned out from LOTR. Honestly, that's it for him. And the problem I have with the LOTR movies, if I'm being critical, is that they often resemble a television show. Either the scenes are fantabulously hollywood styles, or "hey let's shoot this scene cause we have to get to the money shot" styles. But I try not to be critical, else I won't enjoy the films, eh?

Courtney Soloman. Is that the dude who directed Underworld? I heard that sucked. I was going to go out and watch it the other night but I read the reviews on rottentomatoes and decided to wait until all other options were exhausted at the video store when it's finally released. Maybe I'll see it on cable one day when I move back to the states.

And yet haven't people like Ian McKellan and John Rhys-Davies said that they basically felt the same way when they heard Peter "Bad Taste" Jackson was going to be directing, but in short order they decided they didn't know any other director who could have pulled it off?

My bad, I was getting off-line and too lazy to Google... however, if Courtney Solomon had directed Underworld, it would probably get the same reviews...

Like how I tried to save face there?

lol... well that's just it. Only a man responsible for giving us "muppet sex" would be able to pull off an epic tale like this--but even Jackson says he wants to be done with it and get back to his family. He's missing his kids growing up.

The Hobbit will be one movie, yes? No need to get Jackson to do it. I'm more interested in knowing if they'll film it here in New Zealand again. Things are extra-cheap over here. (Except books, movies, and anything worth buying. Those are all sold at American prices.)

Edit: Heavenly Creatures is one of my favorite movies, but I have to be in the right mood to watch it because it's obviously disturbing.

I'd be startled if they didn't.

They'd want to use as much of the same crew as they could, and obviously a few of the locations are already established.
