Well, when the site was briefly up, they had some details on what they were doing with races. Specifically, they're looking to make all the races more different, and they're making it so you don't get all the racial abilities at level one, they give an example of how this allows them to let you play a Drow at level one. As you level up it sounds like you'll be able to pick feats or abilities to get the "racial" abilities - as well as this, some classes will allow races to gain special abilities - example given is a Dwarf Fighter who can get "Friend of Earth" which no other race of Fighter can get.

Thus it sounds like all the races will be pretty uber.

Half-Elves, contrary to expectations, are in. Which is unsurprising because lots of people play them, I guess. They have the ability "Inspiring Presence" (I bet it gives +1 to the equivalent of saves or something).

Awesome. That sounds really, really cool.

I was convinced they were a gonner. I figured they be reduced to an "Elven Heritage" trait, or something.

Must be Gnomes then. Poor little guys.

Even if they aren't slated to show up in hard copy form until an early supplement, I sure hope the first few levels of the gnome race for the PHB classes are posted online early on.

My gnome ... uh, 4E classes to be determined, I guess ... ain't going nowhere. (Illusionist/Bard/Gnome Paragon/Master Specialist seems likely to get trimmed down somewhat, with racial abilities at every level.)

I'm starting to think they wil wrap all the gnomes in spiked chains and armor and throw it all into the sea.
I'd be happy for the spiked chains and armor being gone, not sure about little gnomes.

They will make elves super powerful again. Maybe not in the PHB, but the first supplements will revive the old tradtion of "if it has elven in the name it's cooler and better" and the more recent "make an ideal elven subrace per class" tradition.

I have a feeling the only reason Tieflings were turned into a core race (at the expense of one of the other core races) is because one of the designers is a fanboy of those horned part-fiends. And fanboys tend to throw balance to the dogs.
Well excuse me, Horned hotties have a rich history the D&D. IIRC, the Early 80's Expert set had a female adventurer with a set of horns on the inside cover. I also liked how 3.0 tiefling was one of the few MM entries not screaming or attacking.

Is it foolish to hope that 'obbits will reappear? Almost certainly.

If you mean potbellied, stay-at-home hobbits like those of the Shire, then no because "that's not an adventurous race."

If you mean halflings called hobbits rather than halflings, then no because the Tolkien Estate doesn't want.

Tiefling seemed the most obvious choice. But part of me really wanted to vote "Gnome" as they're near useless in their current incarnation -- and because the idea of a Gnome who is a martial badass capable of slaying hundreds amuses me :D
