Which Ruleset for Pulp/WWII era

I disagree with some of the suggestions so far. Godlike is a gritty realistic supers game, the opposite of what the OP is looking for - cinematic adventure. GURPS, likewise, is at its strongest when realistic. It should also be noted that GURPS and HERO are exceedingly rules-heavy. M&M is quite a reasonable choice, though, it's a bit lite-r and has hero points.

Many of the games Ariosto mentions are archaic and have been out of print for about 30 years.

I ran a Wierd War 2 game in GURPS and woudn't do that again, so I would really recommend Savage Worlds instead. If we ever pick back up with that campaign I'd switch it over to SW in a heartbeat.

I'd be interested in hearing what you have planned so far (if anything,) our game was more like Indiana Jones meets Hellboy via X-Files.

I'm thinking about running a game for my 3e D&D group set in the late 1930s, just as WWII breaks out, about a group protecting or questing for religious objects. I'm gonna try for sort of an Indiana Jones meets the Davinci Code feel. What ruleset would work well for this? I've heard good things about Spirit of the Century. Simple would be positive I think.

Both Spirit of the Century and Hollow Earth Expedition ("HEX") would fit the bill nicely, both in terms of simple cinematic feel and in the era focus of the books. Of the two, SotC is more heroic; HEX is a bit grittier.

I've always wanted to run a game, set against the backdrop of the early days of WWII, in which the PCs are part of an clandestine international organization (Allied or, perhaps affilliated with the Vatican) dedicated to keeping Holy Relics from Hitler. "Who is a nut about the [Occult]"

Adventures could be had in Egypt, Jeruselem, Rome, Berlin, London, Washington DC, and involve the Holy Grail, the True Cross, Nails of the Crucifixion, St Peters bones, etc. Because all I've really played is D&D (1,2,3 & 3.5) I've always envisioned the modern characters having some sort of tie with D&D characters during the Crusades, running several 1930s sessions, then a couple D&D sessions for background, then back to the 1930s and so on.

This idea has been germinating for quite a while, But I have never really been able to go anywhere with it. I imagine it having a swashbuckling tone similar to Indy, with some low level magic for spice. There would definately need to be such supernatural as some of the posts have suggested.

Oh, and as I have recently moved away from group its gonna need to be play by post. Not sure I can pull it off, but I want to try it.

Thanks to all for input.
