A mortal ought not be able to "out deal/find a loophole" with a "devil". This is what devils DO. Even when it looks like its to your advantage, it's still to theirs...ultimately...somehow.

Actually there's a long and storied tradition of heroes outwitting devils at their own game, not to mention other mortals stealing fire from the gods and so on.

So I think it fits well within heroic fantasy to have both (a) mortals (a la John Constantine or Daniel Webster) who can trick devils and gain power that way, and (b) mortals who end up on the short end of the stick. The choice of either option should be a roleplaying/storyline one, of course, and does not require any specific mechanical representation.

I believe that is called a "Cleric".

No. I cannot.:erm:

Why would a LG GOD choose to heed the entreaty of/deal with a Drow?

Especially for something as limited and cockamamie as "mercy when they ask for it"?

Are you, the Drow, making yourself LG? Are you taking on what all of that means/entails? Will you distribute Pelor's power as Pelor wants/demands? If so, POOF, you're a cleric of Pelor. Congratulations!

Nonsense, and nonsense. She's not worshipping him, she's not lawful good, and she's not a cleric spreading the word.

She has enemies, he is the most direct path to striking at them and for whatever otherworldly supernatural reasons may move something as uncanny as a deity he grants it, with a catch.

And it is a catch that may upend her plans, may deny her vengence, may eventually lead to the (from Pelors point of view) redemption of her soul and deny her to Lolth.

Why on earth do you think Devils are unstoppable masters of subtlety whose long range plans will ensnare all in their nets no matter how gentle or unlikely the apparent 'hook' in the pact is, but you deny the same foresight and misdirection to the Gods?

A pact is a bargin, and a gamble. And it's a gamble on both sides.

Again, my take on them...and why I do not use/have them [as PCs] in my games.

--SD

Sure. There are some classes (and races) that I don't necessarily use in my campaigns for one reason or another.

May I ask - I can understand your principle regarding pacts with typically evil forces (e.g. infernal pacts), do you feel the same about the non evil sources of power for the class - fey and star, for instance? Would it make a difference if the class were named in a D&D way which had no correlation to history (e.g. Battle Magician or some such)?

note - I'm not trying to change your mind, just interested on your wider view on the class.

So I sacrifice grammar in order to seek a boon from my pact masters.. What of it?

We have heard of warlocks in 5e, so what is your favourite warlock, and why? I'll say mine once I've got the poll up.

My critiques of 4Ed are well known, but I think the warlock was one of the things the 4Ed team knocked out of the park. A solid home run compared to its predecessor.

Personal fave: the Starlock. I like the Hexblades in general, but since I don't have a DDI sub (and won't ever), I haven't seen the Star pact version of it.
