Ok...this is a whine...a gripe...a rant. I'm girding my loins for whatever vitriol is hurled my way. But dag-nabbit, I want to game. But I'm not getting to. And it's making me twitchy.
For years, I was the primary (if only) DM in my group. I've been with most of my group over 15 years, and even the most recent members over 10. Starting a couple years back, the real world began to step onto our game nights. They became fewer and fewer, sometimes a couple months would pass without a game.
Then comes this past winter. We decide to make a concentrated effort to game more often. We're actually doing pretty well, and for the first time in years, I'm on the player side of the DM screen, and I'm loving it. Then comes January 18th, three days after the last game I played.
I was involved in a car wreck, and a pretty bad one at that. 7 weeks without being able to work or walk. My wife and I are separated (but get along really well) so I have to stay with her as I can't fend for myself. Her place is very small, and no room for gaming. My friends bring me tons of cool "get well" gifts, all of them gaming related. So now I'm being inundated with great supplements, which I read voraciously. I'm excited at the options available to me as both DM and player.
In the interrim, my group begins to play a semi-regular game on Tuesday nights. The problem with this is it's in a town 30 miles away where most of my group lives, and all but one of us work. The plan is for the commuters to play at the home of one of the city residents. Great plan; get off work, go game!
However, despite the fact I work in Little Rock, I don't live there. I'm one of the commuters. But I'm still not able to drive, and have to carpool to where I work (my wife works there, so that's no problem). So, every Tuesday, my crew games and I hear about it on our messageboard.
So, of course, it's suggested that we begin playing at my house (I'm back in my own home now). And what happens? In the month I've been home, every weekend has seen the real world (travel for work, family events, and sickness) cancel every game session planned at my house. So, I sit here in my house, surrounded by books and dice, and stare forlornly out the window at a world where gaming is going on somewhere THIS VERY MINUTE, and am unable to take part in.
Ok... thanks for letting me whine. I'll get my own cheese, thanks. But sometimes, ya just gotta vent, y'know?
grumble...gripe...whine...kvetch....
