I was once a bit irritated by a PC in my game who used whips. He was a ranger that used a whip-dagger in one hand, a nagaika in the other. Sure, they did the same damage, same range, etc. But they had different crit ranges, so he used one for 3 attacks, the other for 2 attacks, because he was trying to min-max the most possible damage out of these dinky little weapons, calculating when his lower attack bonus would provide the best chance of critting. Yikes.
He was a gnome, so they did d4 damage apiece. *snert*
As for the book on whips, I've got about 12 pages of my goal of 25. I mean, there's only so much one can do about whips. But I did have to think long and hard and read a lot to figure out what the reach should be for a colossal creature's whip.
