whirlwind attack

Since you can substitute a trip attack for a melee attack, he makes Trip attacks against every opponent within 5' (a touch attack) for the Whirlwind attack. He then follows up (against each one he dropped) with a melee attack due to Improved trip...

Almost. He'd take each improved Trip attack immediately after the Trip that dropped the opponent, not at the conclusion of the Whirlwind.

Like Cleave attacks - the slot into the Whirlwind sequence, not afterwards.

Yes, poor wording on my part. Viable, then ... but advisable?

If my PCs were high enough level I'd throw this at them this weekend just to try it out. On second thought, It'd only take a 6th level fighter ...

Can you use a Longspear and do a whirlwind attack to everything at 10ft? And if so, what if there's stiff in the way 5 ft away?

Olgar ... add in Knockdown. Whack 'em normally, and if you succeed ... free trip attack. >8)

And use a Spiked Chain. That way you can get reach attacks, and still WW properly. Not to mention, if you drop a foe w/in 5' durign a WW, nothign says you can't direct your Cleave to a target MORE than 5' away (via the 10' reach) ...

Hmm... it does remind one of Kung Fu action theatre, where one guy gets mobed, and then with a twirl of his trusty staff knocks each and every one onto their butts. Or Mortal Kombat. :)

I can see how some might think this could get excessive, but you have other people going on about how a Fighter's only real chance aginst an equal level Wizard is to grapple, and that a Wizard can out damage any fighter due to the ability to rest between significant encounters in most games. While I don't buy either, I don't see a problem letting someone combine Feats in such a fashion. Both because they take the wind out of the above arguments, and the Player paid for the darn things.

Besides, the PC should have to work to get a shot at pulling off that combo. Any group of mid to high level fighters is going to know better than to klump, so he is going to have to be lucky, or lure them into an ambush. It would certainly be more interesting to see someone go diving head first into a rush of soldiers that could possible kill him than to simply Fireball them, for simillar effects.

No, but there is an epic feat that will let you do this (gets really nice with a thunderlance)

Or one of the scenes from the Matrix: Reloaded Trailer, where Neo is surrounded by agents.
