Getting lost in fantasy maps
I didn't see a thread, so here one is.

It's a new series on USA this year, but I'm downloading it through iTunes. I just got done watching the midseason finale . . . and I cannot figure out WTF is going on!

Any theories?

And now we have have to wait more than a month for it to return! Gah! Excellent cliff-hanger!

Nope, wasn't clear to me, either. I figure that we're supposed to believe that the main FBI guy is the person "inside the agency" that's keep Neal from his girlfriend, but that it's a red herring. What's actually happening, though, I don't know.

I agree that that is what we are supposed to come away with. I also agree that that is not what is happening.

My take is that
Peter has also been following another scammer/fraud artist. That this fraud artist is scamming Neil. It may even be that Kate is the mastermind behind the fraud targeting Neil, or that she is part of a team.

Peter has known all along that Kate was up to no good, but maybe figured that Neil was smart enough to figure it out on his own. When in this past episode Neil proved he hadn't figured it out and that Neil was so compromised by his urge to "save" his damsel in distress that it got in the way of his work with Peter, then Peter decided to confront Kate about her schemes in person.

At least that is the best thing I can come up with that doesn't make Peter out as the horrible person we are clearly meant to think. Because if Peter is really that awful, it would kind of make this show's premise disappear in an instant.

I think....

Maybe Peter is trying to truly redeem Neil. Kate is in on it, and always was. Peter is basically using Kate as this ultimate piece of Cheese in a giant maze. The reason is because he needs Neil to solve all these puzzles to truly feel like he's won and earned what he's gotten. He things maybe Neil can't see past the puzzle. As Neil solves more and more puzzles for "The Good Side" he slowly becomes someonewho wants to be good. The ultimate payoff would be staged with Niel finally finding Kate. Thusly redeemed, in soul and in the eyes of the law, with Kate and Peter at his side Neil could re-enter society fighting the good fight, living the good life.
