Elan is the least of the worries when it comes to edition change.

"Sorry Thog, we can't bring you into combat until your class AND race are published. Right now you're in a state of flux."

"Thog no like quantum uncertainty. Thog want fully exist!"

IIRC, half-orcs are playable in the MM. And it's unlikely Thog would remember to switch out of fighter with the new, shiny exploits at every level :).

I expect that Rich will more further away from mentions of specific mechanics and more into general gaming humour, making a conversion unnecessary.

This.

OotS has moved very very far away from the easy "mechanics jokes" toa character adventure based main thread with a sort of peanut gallery lower humor thread on it. It pokes fun at "D&D" and at this point, it barely matters what edition it is.

I believe Burlew has stated that the first strip is not one of his favorites. If you read the commentary in the printed books, it is pretty clear that what started as throwaway gags he now sees as something more. So I expect no overt conversion. Now naturally, the new gaming material that emerges from people playing 4E will give him new fodder, but as others have said, he can work that in just fine without conversion.

Oooh yeah, that would be so sweet!
But what about Nale then...

He could still be a multiclass rogue/fighter/wizard specializing in illusion and enchantment. In fact, that could be a source of a joke, since it will be possible sooner than simply playing a bard will.
