Who can use a Staff of Healing

Lord Thurham

First Post
I am looking at a module that 2 of my gaming groups are currently going through. One of the treasure items is a Staff of Healing. When the party(s) get to this point and possibly obtain this staff, who's(what classes) eligible to actually use it? Can you cite page numbers or SRD quotes thanks!

Thanks!

Staffs use spell trigger activation (DMG p. 204, under "Activation"). Each individual power is usable by anyone who has that spell on their class spell list (DMG p. 175, under "Spell Trigger").

Spell Trigger

Staffs: [DMG:204]

Activation:
Staffs use the spell trigger activation method, so casting a spell from a staff is usually a standard action that doesn't provoke attacks of opportunity.

Using Items [DMG:175]

Spell Trigger:
Spell trigger activation is similar to spell completion, but it's even simpler. No gestures or spell finishing is needed, just a special knowledge of spellcasting that an appropriate character would know and a singler workd that must be spoken. This means that if a wizard picks up a spell trigger activation item (such as a wand or a staff) and that item stores a wizard spell, she knows how to use a spell trigger titem that stores that spell. (this is the case even for a character who can't actually cast spells, such as a 3rd-level paladin.) The user must still determine what spell is stored in the item before she can activate it. Activating a spell trigger item is a standard action and does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

According to DMG P.204, Staffs use the spell trigger activation method.
According to DMG P.175, to use a spell trigger item, a character must have that spell on his class spell list. His class level is irrelevant. So, even a 1st-level paladin can use a spell trigger item with Cure Light Wounds spell.
According to DMG P.204, Staff of Healing contain those 4 spells.
*Lesser Restoration (Clr 2, Drd 2)
*Cure Serious Wounds (Brd 3, Clr 2, Drd 3, Healing 2, Pal 3, Rgr 3)
*Remove Blindness/Deafness (Clr 3, Pal 3)
-Remove Disease (Brd 3, Clr 3, Drd 3, Rgr 3)

Thus, a cleric of any level of any level can use all the powers of this staff.
A Druid of any level can use Lessor Restoration, Cure Serious Wounds & Remove Disease.
A Bard of any level can use Cure Serious Wounds & Remove Disease.
A Paladin of any level can use Cure Serious Wounds & Remove Blindness/Deafness
A Ranger of any level can use Cure Serious Wounds & Remove Disease.

UMD

Don't forget about Rogues and Bards with Use Magic Device (and Sorcerers? I can't remember if they get Use Magic Device in 3.5 or not, there is just too much to remember now :p). With a DC of 20 they can use pretty much any Staff, Wand, or Scroll.

UMD is no longer an exclusive skill in 3.5, so anyone who wants can spend cross-class ranks on it.

Or use one of the "Classitize a Cross-Class Skill" feats.

Use Magic Device has seen a LOT of use in our high-level campaign because the party completely lacks in arcane spellcasters. Therefore the two arcane staves that have been found are in the hands of the Rogue / Psion.
