Who lives in Washington DC?

The MAN is coming to town!

I could probably also handle lunch in the city. I'll watch this space.

Just remember, the thing to see: The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum . All else pales in comparison.

About a half hour away by car depending on the time of day, but the adjunct near Dulles Airport is great too:

Be advised, parking is $12 for the visit.

If you're going to be in downtown DC, you want to stay downtown. Traffic and transit time makes going out of the city a pain. DC has some of the WORST traffic of any city in the U.S.

Air and Space is very cool, but check out some of the others on the Web. Natural History and American History are also good. The zoo is very good, but takes at least 1/2 day. It is easy to see the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, White House and Capitol all in a single walk, plus other things (e.g., Vietnam Memorial). White House tours have to be booked in advance. The Spy Museum is also pretty good, but buy tickets in advance.

Nightlife areas in DC include Georgetown, Adams Morgan, and H St. in Northeast. The 9:30 Club is the best live music downtown, though there are a few other venues. The area around the Verizon Center near Chinatown also has tons of bars and restaurants, some of which are pretty good. I like Jaleo and Cafe Atlantico, personally. There are more college-type hangouts in the Foggy Bottom/GWU area up to Dupont Circle. The Brickskellar is well known for its wide selection of beers. The best pricey restaurant in DC is, IMNSHO, Citronelle in the Four Seasons Georgetown. Georgia Browns is also worth a look -- it is more casual and (slightly) less expensive, and serves southern American cuisine.

DC area here (Silver Spring, MD)... I could probably gather a decent crew (my wife, some others from our regular group) for a cookout and bring a covered dish or two. Yum!

Queen Dop, I posted months ago in the DC/MD/NoVA gameday thread and then kinda dropped into lurk mode due to RL busy-ness. Seems like Morrus' visit would be a good opportunity to expand the local network, since I have yet to meet many of you ENWorlders in person.

Happy GenCon, hope to meet many of you there as well!

Have you checked in on this forum, yet?! We've got a date and the planning process is underway! :D :D :D

I will whole-heartedly second the D.P.Murphy's recommendation of the Brickskellar.....my wife and I were directed towards it by an employee of a bookstore just off the tube-stop, and I can tell you that while some of the food was only above average (with nothing that really jumped out and screamed, "Eat me you fool, what are you waiting for?!?!") I can assure you that the beer selection was bloody fantastic!! :D :D

Cheers,
Colin

That's just the secondary museum. The regular Air and Space hasn't moved from the mall. Though I don't particularly like Air and Space because I don't like being surrounded by screaming children as I museum.

The Brick has food?

I've not been there in a while. I could use me some Caledonian Amber about now.

The Air and Space annex out in Dulles is awesome if you just want to drool over the hardware (including the original space shuttle). Been a couple years since the last time I was out there, but it wasn't nearly as 'educational' in that it didn't have as many focused exhibits on a particular topic.

But getting to walk around Enterprise and an SR71 is not to be missed.

Ya know its funny, of all the places in DC I also thought of this.

Last time I was there they where serving buffalo/bison.

If you're into the alternative scene, Dr. Dremos in Clarendon across the river in VA has a great selection: live bands, pool, foozball, a lounge atmosphere, 40 beers on tap and three beer pong tables. And it's strategically placed for a pub crawl, as there are tons of bars within a few blocks on Wilson Avenue.

I can also recommend highly Pizzeria Paradiso. They have a location off Dupont Circle and one in Georgetown. Can't say for sure about the Dupont location; but the Georgetown one has TONS of beers with several on tap. And you can get really good pizza.
