The souls/larvae that you have to gather for the ever so friendly fiend that makes the items for you because he owes you a favor.

*fiendish grin*

Well, that's how it typically happens in my current campaign, but they've not been making so many custom items so much as having come across some really nifty ones.

I House Rule to allow up to half the XP to be paid by another (willing) participent. Now that the party has an Effigy Master and all around magic item factory with them we'll see how it pans out.

Consumable XP

I try to encourage things that benefit everyone in the game. The guys bring chips, candies, waters, etc to add to a chest I keep in the game room that we call the "Treasure Chest". Every item dontated provides what I call Consumable XP that is awarded to the party. This xp pool can be used for anything the group chooses. Its not a great ammount at any one time, but over months of gaming it builds up. It levels off PC's who are really close, and it's been used to pay for magical item creation. Its been a very useful (and delicious) idea that has served us well since we started it about six years ago.

Here we've always played that the one with the IC feat pays the Xp cost. It has the side effect of keeping item creation under a certain amount, as the crafter wouldn't want to lag behind the party's average level.

I had a DM who had a house rule:

He allowed, but did not require party members to place up 10% of earned XP into a pool to be used for creating and crafting magic items for the party.

However, in our group we rarely if ever have time to create magic items. We are usually way to preoccupied saving the world or trying to destroy it.

In my game, the person crafting/creating the item can either:
1) Pay the cost himself
2) Gather "power components" (which may earn more XP in and of itself than the actual xp cost)
3) Sacrifice something/one to provide the necessary power.
