The New season of Critical Role is getting a theatrical release - times are apparently changing.

Critical role is exponentially more popular than Gary Gygax or his history. As an old gamer, that pains me to say, but it's true lol. If it weren't, we'd all be playing OSR versions of 1e or OD&D instead of 5e. Not to mention a lot of bad press from several of the people during that era, including resurgences of some really problematic things Gary said himself that turns off a lot of this generation's gamers.

I feel comfortable saying that a product (book, tv show, livestream, movie, whatever) with Matt Mercer's name on it will be a much bigger draw than one with Gary's name on it to the gaming community as a whole. TBH, I don't think most D&D gamers at this point care about Gary or his history/legacy one bit. They just want to enjoy the modern game as it's presented now.
