Who would you pick to design Fourth Edition?

greg costikyian:even if it was just for flavor text. I really dig his writing, another day another dungeon is up there probably being my favorite fantasy novel. And the hints at how magic worked in his world I really liked.

I'd want a group of the Best of the Best in D&D writers (mostly rules-wise, since the core rules are just that, rules), but not limited to:
Monte Cook
Mike Mearls
Skip Williams
Sean Reynolds

With the following in an advisory role for style and flavor:
Ed Greenwood
Gary Gygax

Show them 3.5, and say "This was excellent, make it even better."

Remember that this is D&D, if you change it too much it will be D&D in name only. Claiming "No Sacred Cows" is a fallacy, if it was a percentile based classless skill-based game with an open-ended non-vancian spell system that only uses d12's (for hyperbole to make a point) it's not going to be D&D anymore, no matter what you call it. It might even be an excellent game, but it's just not going to be D&D.

Preferably, make the Forgotten Realms the default setting instead of Greyhawk, put Psionics in the core (at least Wild Talent rules in the DMG as an option, preferably a Psionic class and full psionic rules), and liberally borrow some good ideas from Iron Heroes (the Man At Arms becomes the new Fighter, IH Thief strongly inspires 4e Rogue) Arcana Evolved (generic spells like Ability Boost and Energy Bolt instead of Cat's Grace and Lightning Bolt), and d20 Modern & Unearthed Arcana (Action Points, Class Defense Bonus, Reputation Bonus).

Add a spontaneous divine caster to the core rules (Likely to be a derivation of Favored Soul, but lose the wings and replace them with another ability). Make Paladin a Prestige Class, the same class as Blackguard except the abilities depend on alignment.

The Big Three would be:

S. John Ross (Layout)
Eric Holmes (Line Editor)
Jonathan Tweet (Design Lead)

Making Contributions to the Core Rules would be:

Gary Gygax, Dave Arneson (Co-Authored Foreword)
Christopher Shy (Cover Art)
Brom, Dan Smith (Interior Art)
Robin D. Laws (DM Advice - Social Dynamic)
S. John Ross (DM Advice - Genre)
Ken Hite (DM Advice - Plotting)
Mac Golden, Davis Chenault (Killing Sacred Cows, Cutting Fat)
Bruce Baugh (Common Sense)

4e - the 4Johns Edition! ;)

Well, the other three Johns might murder Wick in short order, making it the 3 Johns and One Bloody Corpse edition ;)

Nah, Tweet and Tynes would squabble over whether to kill Wick or Ross first.

They can't kill Ross - he's the only one of the four with a talent for stunning graphic presentation. ;)

While I see the need for even having 4E as grasping at thin air

I would pick

1. Monte Cook
2. Sean Reynolds
3. Skip Williams
4. all the Rat Bastard DMS- led by PirateCat
5. Mike Mearls
6. Will Upchurch
7. A Double Triad of Developers including Gygax, Arneson, Baker, Greenwood
8. Steve Kenson
9. Monte Cook
10 Monte Cook
11 Monte I said it 3.5 times

Seriously are we going to spend our money on a new edition when we have a good work bed twice over, and so many variations on what we can do and so many resources for what we can read. I for one will not, unless...

It sticks with d20 and does rules clarification...
I will not let HASBRO CO. stick it to my wallet again and again, and again
Monte Did a good job with what he did with the DMG 3.0
And his crew did a good job.

I think that we are getting a little jazzed or something, I mean we dont have the limits of the Auto Industry where it takes a bit to retool the factories, but really WHY do we need a 4th, or 5th edition and when does it end

Then ask yourselves what happens if its a flop and HASBRO does away with its RPG Market At WOTC I like WOTC and I like the idea of bettering the system but when is enough.
