Whole lotta lurkin' goin' on

Shadowdancer

First Post
I'm really bored at work tonight (this morning), so I've been scrolling through the members list here on EN World, and I've noticed some interesting things.

Of the 30,850 registered users, almost half -- 14,730 -- have never posted. 490 pages worth of non-posting members (at 30 users per page). Many of these people even went to the trouble of finding and posting a user avatar, but never bothered to make a post.

16,120 users have 1 post or more.

3,308 users have only 1 post.

23,415 users have less than 10 posts.

2,808 have 100 or more posts.

515 have 1,000 or more posts.

The user with the highest post total is almost 20,000 posts -- 19,388 to be exact -- ahead of the second-place poster. And that poster is more than 1,000 posts ahead of No. 3. (I'll leave their identities to those interested enough in doing a little detective work of their own.)

My post total -- 1,984 -- ranks me at No. 254, which is on page 9 of the 1,028 pages of posters and in the top 2 percent of all posters.

I'm one of those, as you can see, that have less than 100 posts.

My lack of posts is probably due to not wanting to post unless I have something useful to say. Doesn't mean that I don't try to contribute, but I just want to make sure that I'm not spamming needlessly - probably an unwarranted worry, but there it is.

If I waited until I had something useful to say, I'd never post. I think that could apply to a lot of posters, to be honest, and I don't mean that in an offensive way. ENWorld is a very diverse community, and sometimes we post just to be friendly. Random pointless posting helps me pass the time at work!

If you want to post but think you have nothing important to say, I invite you to a Hivemind thread. Goofy, stream of consciousness fun! There's (almost) no such thing as a useless post! heh..

Yeah, being the introverted type, I've always had trouble talking to people I don't know, even in forums(!), but it's something that I've constantly been working on.

I find it much easier to post in the relative anonymity of the forums than speak to people I don't know in real life. I probably post more words per day than I speak to my coworkers.

Well, I work in a grocery store, so it's impossible for me *not* to speak to my co-workers, much less the customers. But in that respect, it's all part of the job, and I find it easy to do. Social situations are a whole nuther aminal, so to speak. But yeah, I have found it easier to post in the forums as time passes, so I'm hoping that some of that will rub off into offline life, too.

I know what you mean. I find that my level of introvertedness doesn't change much on the internet, not that I'm super introverted, but I just act the same pretty much regardless of annonyminty.

Occasionally there is a Lurkers Roll call thread - that incourages Lurkers to speak up. But to work well they need to be started by a lurker. (I think)

on Enworld Im running neck and neck with Shadowdancer, but on Nunkinland im in the under 100 and on RPG.net I have 2 posts :) although I read those boards 2-4 times per week, and have for over a year.

I'm guessing #1 is actually some automated bot or something -- helped with moving stuff from the older version of the boards to these boards?
